Emily Lazar does get a lot of hassle for her compressing from all corners.

But he's right. Of course it's not fair to say to anyone: ''you're not ready for music'' , but I don't know what it's so annoying in his general point? Truth is annoying? For me, it's kind of disappointment, because I always expected the best quality from Garbage's records, and this time I have to agree that album is mastered very loudly (loudness war) and suffers from lack of dynamic. I'm not an audiophile, just play it on my AV receivers and DVD system. It's audible, however I wouldn't blame it for ''total destruction'' of NYKoP. It's just one itchy element. I hope it won't influence on my perception of new album for some months, when I'm finally familiar with all songs and the only thing to find is a new, secret ''meaning'', new alternative sound - without good mastering It can be hard and unpleasant

Unfortunately, he's right.
Also he's almost right about last Depeche Mode's albums. I hope that DM will choose another studio for mastering of their next album.

I always felt Bleed Like Me was mastered a bit too loud. Absolute Garbage suffers from it in places as well. Still no reason to be vile about it.
The internet. Allowing anonymous wankstains with a keyboard and a chip on their shoulders to shower people with their shit since the 90s.

What does he mean by "flat and weak"?
Any audio geeks care to discuss?

What does he mean by "flat and weak"? Any audio geeks care to discuss? I'm not an audio geek but this "flat and weak" sound could mean that the song lacks dynamics: the loud parts sound loud, the soft parts sound louder than expected. Basically the whole song feels loud and some sounds are buried in the mix.

Emily rules. I plan to use the Lodge in the future with my own work.

Hmm. I've only noticed it at the beginning of Automatic Systematic Habit. It sounds too loud in the beginning. I lowered the EQ thingy (not an audio expert, I don't even know the terms). lol

Unfortunately I agree with most of the comments of this guy, I love "Control" but I can't stand the end, it's such a sonic mess, I mean it could be the kind of noise that The Raveonettes or Sonic Youth uses on their songs but I can deal and enjoy that kind of noise but the outro of "Control", it's just, I can't even describe it, I mean I almost skip that part most of the time.
"Felt" is another song I'm very dissapointed with. It's such a beautiful song full of layers and guitars and effects but most of the time I can't really enjoy it cause all that wonderful production gets lost and the final audio is not that good.
And I can describe my dissapointment with most of the songs on the album, I downloaded several versions of the album, mp3, flac, iTunes, I ripped the CD, I even thought to buy a $250 dls Bose headphones but nothing has worked for me so far.
I mean, I love the album and I can't stop listening to it but definetly the mastering could have been A LOT BETTER.

Do you think the band would remaster the album later? Maybe if there is a re-release with new songs?

I am guessing the band must be happy with the mastering as they used her for Bleed Like Me also.
It would have been neat if they used the company that mastered Version 2.0.

It's mastered for shitty computer speakers, like most records these days. Hoping the CD and vinyl sound better.

"flat and weak" are not audiophile terms, they're almost meaningless terms that are subjective and not quantifiable. if the critic meant that there wasn't much dynamic range, that might be a clearer way to say it.
i don't argue with criticisms of clipping/compression, but why pick on this album? it's true for 99% of the new releases, has been for years, and is the current standard for pop. lossy frequency compression is the norm too (mp3 etc). distasteful as it is, it's the kid-driven culture of music now, and carping about one particular release seems slightly strange.
there might be other factors contributing besides compression. if the band wanted a muddy or distorted sound, they may have done some of this intentionally. i'd hesitate to blame the mastering entirely for the sound until i had more data.

but why pick on this album? it's true for 99% of the new releases Right, but I think he is a fan, not troll. He is not against Garbage or new album. Probably I know him (and it's not me, really ) and we talked about this bad mastering some days ago...

I haven't listened to my CD yet, just the download. I have absolutely no idea about the technical side of these things, but it does sound quite piercing at times.

Do you guys know where "Who's gonna ride your wild horses" were recorded and mastered?? Cause I have a medium quality versión of it and still sounds amazing. You can hear every single beat and guitar and the effects.
