I read the Black Dahlia and loved it. So when the movie came out I was so excited to take my friends to see it, only be very disappointed and look like an idiot because I was bragging to them how great the book was (they couldn't believe the book was any good with the movie being so very bad). Believe me, don't waste your time with the movie, the book was butchered . I also just finished the last book in the trilogy of Philip Pullmans "His Dark Material's-The Amber Spyglass" everyone of those books were fantastic!

a daily newspaper, a weekly news magazine, a monthly science magazine, a bi-monthly Smithsonian aviation & space magazine, news on the web, research reading on the web (I enjoy looking up word definitions, idioms, quotes, and other such doodads of our English language)
It's been a couple years since I last read a book. Shame on me as I did learn in English class in high school that reading the classics of American literature can be every bit a mind expanding experience as taking a 1000-day trip around the world to meet a 1000 different souls.
Ten years ago, I bought a copy of "Moby Dick." I have not yet read that book from cover to cover. I haven't read more than a quarter of it. My excuse is that my mind is too unsettled right now to focus on that kind of reading -- that kind of reading where you have to invest a good bit of your time into it before you experience a payoff (no instant gratification in this kind of reading). But I know that kind of reading is the most rewarding kind, ...and I learned that in English class in high school.

My all time favourite books EVER! DO NOT SEE THE GOLDEN COMPASS (if you haven't already) - they destroy Northern Lights its absolutely butchered.
The ending is changed for a Hollywood happy ending (blasphemy), the end isn't in chronolical ordering from the book, characters know things they aern't meant to till later on in the series and/or they just seem know stuff out of the blue with no explanation whatsoever, Kaisa isn't even in it ffs.
The whole thing is rushed through at 100mph all the rich detail is lost - part of the wonder of those books, are the characters who you barely get a glimpse of in the film. And crucially aswell the atheistic undertone is completely lost in the mix ( not that I expected the bit about Genesis to be in there) - they try subtely working it in but its crap.
If you havent already do yourself a favour and don't see the film. I waited desperately for 4 years for it in the wake of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter (think HDM is infinitely superior to both - ooh controversial!!) and was completely let down (bar Nicole Kidman if those of you have read the books was perfectly cast as Marissa Coulter). The stage version at the National in London was spectacular by comparison which was supremely faithful to the book, kept the detail in and still managed to be shorter than the film at 90mins.

Trust me, I seen the ad for it and there is no way I'm going to see it. I say Nicole would do a great job!

mm.. okay, now i'm not going to see that movie. but why, oh why movies can't be as good as those books. almost all the movies that are based on books suck really hard.

I have to admit mssm2 I think HDM are my new favorite books, they were amazing from beginning to end (even if I'm sure there could have been some kind of loop hole Lyra and Will could have figured out ). I saw the movie when it first came out, and actually liked it. By the time I started reading the book, which was this past June, I had forgotten most details about the movie anyway. So when I finished the first book I watched the movie to see what the difference was and couldn't even get past the first 30 min. They had unnecessarily changed so much and (I agree with you ) ruined the book. Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter was the best part of the movie. She was dead on (even though she had blonde hair) I only wish I could see the play. I soo much enjoyed these books, I'm trying to get my friends to read them but they can't get past that they are supposed to be kids books (which i completely disagree with, I wouldn't have enjoyed it half as much it if I were a kid not to mention comprehend it). sorry midori to bust your bubble ...but books are always better than the movie

its a good film I havent read the book but my sister has and she enjoyed both! But I love Michelle Yeoh so Im biased!
Stef19 - the stage show was wonderful - if the film had been like that it truly would have been amazing even with the same cast in it! Funny 2 bonds have played Lord Asriel - in the stage version it was Timothy Dalton

I enjoyed Memoirs of a Geisha the movie, but I never read the book either so I have nothing to compare it to.
