STUDIO DIARY #37 (March 2nd - 8th, 2001)
Friday 2nd
So it's full steam ahead here in Madison. Our managers seemed to approve of the material we played them on wednesday and gave us huge big smiling thumbs up.Date set for finishing this damned thing: May 15th.
Was gifted a gorgeous collection of Edith Sitwell poetry this afternoon by a friend and I am absolutely blown away with her writing. It's weird......it's like she was the Patti Smith of her generation but coming more than twenty years before. Maybe she was even more creative and subversive if you consider the socially constrictive climate in which she was writing.
Anyway......i digress............we had a minor celebration in the studio today. We all pigged down silly on our airmail delivered meal!!! Despite my initial cynicism I have to now admit, it was gloriously good!
Saturday 3rd
Oh it's a sad day for Scotland. England beat us savagely at rubgy 43-3 so I've stuck "Put us in Tune" by Thou on the stereo and enjoying having my feathers being soothed.
Some freaky shit going on in the UK with all this Foot and Mouth Disease. What a truly diabolical fiasco and yet another hard hit for all the UK farmers especially coming so soon after the enormously damaging Mad Cow scare. It's all so yucky and insane to think how much we have poisoned our food chain.Even soy beans and tofu have been fiddled about with to such an unholy degree that it's a matter of debate as to how safe they are to eat these days.Stick to the organic vegetables my friends. That's my advice!!!!! NO YOU CANNOT SNEAK OFF TO MACDONALDS................well MAYBE........as long as you keep your distance from the fecal matter on the food trays and stick to the fries.
Nothing much happening at the studio today.........Steve is out of town and Butch's girlfriend is in visiting from LA so once again we are pared down to two green bottles.El Duce and I...................holding down the fort. He's working on a delicate accoustic guitar part in "Drive you Home" and I am merely practising on mine.
Meeting Butch and friends for a cocktail later and considering going to see "Pollock".I hear it's pretty good and I am afterall a huge Ed Harris fan.
Sunday 4th
Day off
Monday 5th
Notable of the day: I managed 6 pull-ups this morning at my training session.Damn near shat myself with the strain of the effort but managed it nevertheless.I am shamelessly proud of myself.
In direct oppositon to the headway I am making in the athletic department......I can't stop myself from raiding the studio's secret cookie stash of "Double the Filling" Oreos.I try to refrain from doing so but something in my brain just snaps and I can't seem to stop myself from crossing the room like a zombie and slipping my tiny hand into the kitchen cabinet and plucking yet one more biscuit from the packet.
Tuesday 6th
Sang keeper vocals on "Parade" last night and changed some lyrics at the very last minute.I'm now calling this song "Always Tomorrow".
Also tried to figure out a key for "Happiness" but we couldn't make up our minds which one we liked best so we've shelved it for the time being. Oh decisions......decisions.
I see on the front page of every news paper today that there's been another frightful shoot-out at a Californian High School.I do hope Charlton Heston and his cronies in the NRA are feeling suitably proud of themselves.Blood is on their very hands if you ask me.
Wednesday 7th
We had a long and stressfull meeting with our business managers this afternoon. We were having to come to some kind of uneasy agreement over what might happen with the pedantics of our publishing rights in the event of the untimely death of one or more of our band members.
Jeez.....it was all kind of depressing but also in a morose and black humoured kind of way rather funny too.We were all laughing hysterically at the idea of one of us being dead in a coffin and the other three having to continue on touring regardless.
Okay.....so it losses something in the translation but it was funny at the time.
Thursday 8th
Everyone is really depressed here in the studio today. It's snowing again and we're seriously at the end of our tethers. Is there no end to the winters here? They just seem to go on and on forever and ever.
Can't stop listening to the track "When I burn off into the distance" by Finley Quaye on his album "Vanguard".It's my theme song for today. It's like some freaky kind of show tune.I love it!
Blew off my training session this morning so I could sleep-in late only to remember at the last minute that I had a chiropractic session an hour later so not only did I have to get up more or less at my normal hour but I now feel like a tub of lumpy, fatty lard. As a consequence of my rather rash cancellation and my ensuing disgruntlement the boys are all refusing to speak to me because I am being so unreasonably grumpy. I suppose their reaction is understandable but irritating nevertheless.
Began "Run" by Douglas E Winter last night. Not that deep into it yet but so far it's pretty damned good.Maybe I should just return to the hotel and get lost in my book.
