STUDIO DIARY #35 (February 16th - 22nd, 2001)
Friday 16th
I CANNOT BELIEVE IT.I cannot believe that US and British forces have launched more airstrikes against IRAQ.This is so SCARY and insane.I mean...what is the rational behind such unprovoked aggression? Seems to me like it's just a case of Stupid Dubbleya avenging his dear old dad.
Tip of the week: MAC's Russian Red.It looks SOOOOOooo good.Just paint it on your lips and......KABOOM!!! It's practically SPEAKING to you.
Butch has split for the weekend. He's going to LA to visit his girlfriend and go to Alanis Morrisette's Valentine Party. As for little Shirley
Ann.........well my weekend will be an entirely more low key affair. For starters,I'm going out to see HANNIBAL tonight.(Julianne Moore is so much better a choice than Jodi Foster.I thought she was as wooden as a doorknob in Silence of the lambs.) No such glamourous parties somewhere in Hollywood for me unfortunately!!!!!!
Boo hoo.
Saturday 17th
Worked on a weird little jam with Duke this afternoon and then cut out early to return to the hotel.Curled up in bed for the rest of the day with my new book "Plainsong" by Kent Haruf. Aghhhhhh............ pure bliss.Saturday afternoons were surely designed for lounging around and reading in solitary confinement!!
As I mentioned yesterday........... went to see HANNIBAL last night.Found it to be pretty weak if the truth be told although true to form Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore were as wonderful as ever.Indeed the entire cast was excellent but I thought the script was uninspired, lacking any psychological depth to speak of and there was a distinct lack of any atmosphere or tension in the film. For a movie supposedly dealing with the subject of serial killing......that's all a tad disappointing.I mean.......I want a film like that to go deep into what makes a serial killer tick. That's what's fascinating about such a subject matter. If there is no psychological probing then what are we left with? Some graphic imagery and little else.
Anyway I must dash! I have friends coming in from out of town tonight so I must prepare myself for the evening's debauchery!!!!!
Sunday 18th
Day off
Monday 19th
Monday morning comes around. The same old scene, the same old song but I'm going to see my therapist later this afternoon so I can't complain too much.Oh I simply CANNOT wait!!! Yippppeeeee.
Oooh.....did you see N'sync on Larry King last night? I have decided (seeing as I believe I HAVE to hold an opinion in some form or another on this and every other subject for that matter) that they are WAY cuter than the Backstreet Boys.At LEAST they don't take themselves so seriously.( Especially the one called Joey. He looks so delightfully corruptable and that's always such an appealing trait don't you think?) And they all seem to genuinely get along which is more than can be said of their aforementioned rivals who appear to openly despise one another.
This all said and agreed on (at least in my own two minds ha ha)........I have to also state for the record that they seemed almost horribly "nice".Know what I mean? Boy bands in general are just so bloody nice, it's sickening. I felt myself wanting Slipknot to come on the show and just eat the one that Britney is dating for pure entertainment purposes. His name escapes me...........is it Justin? That's it!!!!! Justin Timberlake. Ha ha ha.....................Slipknot eating N'sync live on tv.Now THAT really would be something.
The studio is drop dead BORING today. It's just me and La Duke trying to come up with a song structure for the idea we were working up on saturday afternoon.Steaming Steven is in Palm Springs for a long weekend and Butch doesn't get back from LA until tomorrow evening.
Twiddle twiddle of the thumbs whilst humming the theme tune to Eastenders.
Tuesday 20th
It's as silent as the grave here in the studio.Duke is editing some drums on "Not in the Mood" and I am alone in the lounge listening to Dave Godins Deep Soul Treasures and wishing I could sing like Carla Thomas. v Wendy Shneider from Bugatti Type 35 is coming by later to take me out for a spin in the car and save me from death by boredom. We're going to go to Target and buy lots of really cheap and cheerful hair baubbles.
In stark contrast to this rather trivial pursuit.........I was looking at some of the "Poem-Pictures" of the painter Philip Guston this morning and stumbled upon several he worked up with the help of poet Stanley Kunitz. (I believe I've refered to him once before in this diary) Anyway I came across one I found to be particularly beautiful called "The Testing Tree".
In a murderous time
The heart breaks and breaks and lives by breaking
It is necessary to go through dark and deeper dark and not to turn.
Wednesday 21st v Hopes for the day:
Eminem will win every single one of his nominated GRAMMY's.
My period will cease.
I will eat sushi for tea.
Napster will be forced to hold on to it's $1 billion dollar compensation bribe.
We'll finish the record.
Thursday 22nd
Well first things first.Does it really need to be said? Steely Dan most certainly did NOT make the record of the year.End of Story.
Hee haw.
Hey ho.
C'est la vie.
Life's not fair.
Too bad.
Oh well.
Nevermind.
WHATEVER.
We got a care package through the post from our record company this morning and so we've lots of new goodies to listen to.Amongst them the new ASH album.(That boy Tim has such an amazing sense of melody. There's hundreds of them buzzing around and whizzing in and out of this record.) Presently listening to "Finelines" by My Vitriol.I love the opening track. It sounds like My Bloody Valentine speeded up with a touch of The Deftones thrown in for good measure.
Went to see my asthma specialist this morning and he gave me an entire array of new inhalers to try out.One looks like a flying saucer...........it's so extremely "New Age" looking .I felt like I was living in an episode of Star Trek when I sucked on it. v I'm also taking these weird capsules that my trainer gave me because I was feeling so exhausted all the time.On the box that they come in is the slogan: SUPERFOOD OF THE 21ST CENTURY. AN UNPARALLELED COMMITMENT TO YOUR HEALTH. Yikes. v How about I (ie.me)just keep eating pizza, chips (the british kind of course) and chocolate and YOU (ie.my trainer) stop making me get up at 7:30 every morning and stuffing me full of superfoods only to work me like a soldier to the point of exhaustion. Now THAT would seem to me like a cheaper, more pleasant and unparalled solution to my health.
