STUDIO DIARY #32 (January 19th - 25th, 2001)
Friday 26th
Oh my god. There's been a massive earthquake in Western India.I can't write in this diary today.
Saturday 27th
Per the above: I feel so lucky to be alive.
Sunday 28th
Day Off
Monday 29th
There's been an ice storm here over night so the roads and pavements are slick with black ice making it absolutely treacherous to simply step out of the car and walk a couple of steps.
Don't know what to write today. My enthusiasm for keeping this diary is dwindling somewhat.Try as I might I can't seem to remember why I even started writing it in the first place.
Watched a little of The Superbowl yesterday evening but had to switch it off because I felt so badly for the Giants. They were cuffed so horribly by The Baltimore Ravens that I was practically feeling their pain myself!!!!!!!! Saw "Traffic" at the weekend too.I thought it was pretty good I must say! Even if it did have to sport a "Cringe Factor 10 Feel Good Moment" near the end.
Main reason for seeing the film in general?
Benicio Del Toro is wonderful.
What else?
Duke has just returned from a fishing trip to Florida Keyes having caught a large tasty old Grouper and so consequently is feeling decidedly chuffed with himself. Storming Steve is still away in Aspen on a skiing trip and is due back today.
Butch is editing drums.
Boring boring boring.
Tuesday 30th
I'm still so BORED. I'm supposed to be practising my guitar but I just can't be bothered.Oh I don't know what's wrong with me.It's not as though I'm downhearted or anything like that.I just have no motivation to DO anything which is actually quite unlike me.I'm usually busy doing SOMETHING.
Read a silly, badly informed piece on the internet this morning concerning our legal "difficulties". Journalists must REALLY be struggling to find something worthy to write about these days.Wouldn't their time be better spent investigating just exactly why we can't buy everlasting lightbulbs? Or why someone hasn't come up with a healthy but SATISFYING....oh please make it SATISFYING alternative to the cigarette? Or why someone has yet to design a car with a non pollutant engine? Or investigate why a cd that costs around 4 cents to make costs the consummer around $17? The musician providing the content of aformentioned cd making approximately a dime a piece after taxes, expenses and commisions.
Yep.............it's certainly food for thought isn't it.
And that's not even touching on the larger and more important issues that face us in this world.
Anyway......I digress.I'm off to check out some new microphones.A BOTTLE by a company called Blue and the new VM1 Klaus Heyne Edition by Brauner (It's supposed to sounbd incredible) and then I'm going to go out with my girl friend to see "Quills" and have a drink and a hearty gossip over a cocktail or two because I can't bear being in this boring old studio any longer listening to Butch edit his damned drums.
Wednesday 31st
Oh dear. "Quills" didn't quite live up to my expectations .It plays out like some kind of camp victorian farce. There were points when the audience in the cinema, myself included, were laughing uproariously at parts of the film that were (I think?!?!?!) intended to be moving and/or dramatic. The delicious Kate Winslet however is adorable as always and Joaquin Phoenix is, lest we forget, awfully nice to gaze at throughout.
We went out and bought ourselves a big juicy Marshall Cabinet this afternoon so we could record some deep subsonic guitars on "Can't Cry these Tears" It makes the guitars sound all smooth like blue velvet.
I so want to get a huge big stack of them for the next tour all in varying shades of bright pink. And maybe Steve could have an Orange stack and Duke a red one.Ooooh it would look SOOOoooooo GOOOoood.
To liven up our dining experience, we had a pizza competition in the studio tonight. We ordered from two different places here in town. One from Glass Nickel Pizza and one from Pavlov's Pizza.(This is the kind of decidedly pathetic sport we like to indulge in.)
Getting off to a spectacular start, the Glass Nickel Pizza arrived 25 minutes ahead of the competion. However despite arriving late we found the Pavlov crust (an extremely important factor in pizza tasting) to be crispier and less doughy than it's rival. In yet another devastating blow to Glass Nickel the group consensus found the filling to be a little on the salty side. However all agreed that Pavlov's was far too greasy for our tastes and lacked somewhat in it's overall flavour. After lengthy and somewhat heated debate we unanimously came to the conclusion that Glass Nickel won out over Pavlov's although we're still pining for the days before Pizza Pit closed down when we could get the 16" Gut Bomb Special for $4:99.They kept our our bellies full and our spirits a loft.
Ah yes (sigh).........these were the days.
Thursday 1st of Feb
The day started fearlessly with a 9am Guts and Glory exercise class.I swear there is nothing worse than an early morning torture session like that!!!!! I go along with my girlfriend and I have to confess,in an effort to get through the ordeal we behave so terribly (always laughing, moaning and swearing like troupers) that I'm convinced we're going to get asked to leave the class one of these days. We're like French and Saunders in there. It's really undignified behaviour that certainly doesn't behoof two women who wouldn't be laughing quite so loudly were they forced to stand butt naked infront of a full length mirror and examine the ravages of time.Oh would they be working harder in class or what?!?!??!?!?!?!?!!?
Ha ha ha........
Talking of which........I'm supposed to be flying to NYC at the weekend for a Gear Magazine shoot and I'm absolutely dreading the thought.
All those make-up artists, hairdressers and stylists who are used to working with supermodels all huddled around you in a trailer eyeing up your fatty bits.
Oh god help me.
