STUDIO DIARY #29 (December 8th - 29th, 2000)
Friday 8th
Completely depleted of all energy, I returned from NYC late last night to find the boys in laudably high spirits despite the fact that Madison is snowed under and cold as hell. Exhausted by the pace of my jaunt to the city, I feel somewhat relieved to be back in the bosom of the family so to speak. Highlights of my trip:
Kissing the soft wee fuzzy cheek of my sister for the first time since April. Hearing U2 play "One" in the intimate setting of "Irving Plaza" and it making me cry.
Dining @ Peter Lugers in Brooklyn. An experience not recommended for the faint of heart.
A shoe fetish splurge @ Jeffrey on West 14th in the meat packing district.Oh it felt SOOOOooooooo good.I'm having a love affair with the boots I bought. Steve has brought the dogs in today and they keep barking like crazy every time Duke even moves a muscle.I'm not kidding.........all he needs to do is fractionally bend a leg and they zoom around the room as though someone has stuffed a rocket up their bums..........yapping madly and causing absolute mayhem.Duke needless to say, torments them mercilessly.I think I may have to intervene on the dogs behalf very shortly. They're only little afterall. Wanted to thank Todd Talady for sending the wonderful books on Stanley Kunitz and Eleanor R. That was a totally unnecessary yet completely delightful gesture!!!
Also a shout out to Jennifer Jolly.Mostly because of her ridiculously magnificent surname (Yes dear. That name of yours is indeed truly IRONIC.) but also for sending me the most darling picture of Edinburgh Castle under a snow fall.(FYI.I've taped it into the montage I've got going on the walls of my vocal booth.)
We worked some more on "Nobody loves you When You're Gone" today. It sounds something like David Lynch meeting a drunken Emile Zola.
Ha ha ha..............
PS.Reading a brilliant book that I began only yesterday: 'Girls" by Frederick Busch. It's so wonderfully written, it gives me the chills. Can't recommend it more highly.
PPS. Can't WAIT to see the movie "Quills".Saw a trailer for it today on our studio tv monitor and it looks seriously EROTIC.I haven't seen anything truly erotic for SOOooo long. Not since "Dangerous Liasons".Oh I hope it's good. And I hope we get to see lots of the lovely, delicious Kate Winslet in various states of undress. All that corsetry and frilly pantaloon stuff makes me swoon.
Saturday 9th
Don't you think that our society has become so horribly restrictive in the way that we expect.......nay ALLOW...... people to express themselves? I mean......don't you feel that we're all encouraged to fit into a neatly squared off box? Sanctioned and homogenized and state controlled. It really is beginning to PISS ME RIGHT OFF.
God forbid we actually give voice to our FEELINGS, FEARS, ASPIRATIONS or our FANTASIES.Modern conversation has just become so utterly DULL.What has happened to the MYTHIC PROPORTIONS? To GRAND THEMES? To CONVICTIONS? To TENDERNESS? To CONNECTION?
Anyway...........can't BELIEVE what's going on in Florida. This is completely CRAZY, corrupt and alarmingly partisan. Each and every one of the Supreme Court Judges have voted in line with their political affiliations and I think that's scandalous and shameful.
Busy little bee today:
Changed all the verse lyrics on "Till the Day I die". (The chorus is GOooooood)
Changed the melody and finalized the lyrics on the chorus of "Pay you Back" (Title will now have to change too.)
Sang keeper vocals on "Nobody Loves You when You're Gone". (I went off on a uber operatic rant on the outro of this one and then pruned it all down again.) We're going to do a rough mix on it later tonight. It's beginning to sound "right".
PS.Linda Kennedy is NOT my sister.
Sunday 10th
Day Off
Monday 11th
The whole of Madison, Wisconsin has ground to a halt today due to the first truly heavy snowfall of the winter. It looks utterly divine outside. All delicately white and powdery.
Butch hasn't even been able to make it in because his car can't cut through the snow!!!
I swear.....I've never seen anything quite like it.
For some light relief I received the most adorable package from Kittie this morning, courtesy of Stefanie and Molly.(Thankyou dear tiger cubs.)The letters from Fallon and Talena were funny as hell and I've pasted the autographed flat on the inside of my vocal booth to cheer me up when I start to feel like the only girl in the world who experiences the world the way I do.
Thinking of going back to the hotel early and practising my guitar.I haven't picked it up since I left for NYC.

Tuesday 12th
Managed to get out and do some gruesome Christmas shopping this morning.I hate to say it but I am so utterly NOT filled with the spirit of Christmas that I want to karate chop every single person who gets in my way as I fight through the maddening crowds. I fear I may be arrested one of these days for my antisocial behaviour.
Now I'm back at the studio and I feel EXHAUSTED and depleted of all energy and enthusiasm. If one more person dons a cheeky grin and bleats out HAPPY HOLIDAYS.....I'm going to scream!!!!!!!
I also happened to embark upon a new level of workout with my trainer this morning. She calls it her "Navy Seal" program!!! I swear I nearly vomited. She had me suffering through a whole range of perverted moves such as pull ups, push ups and jumping jacks, jump rope and crunches and ohmigod you NAME it.........I was doing it. It was AWFUL.
Learnt how to play "Somewhere over the Rainbow" on guitar this afternoon so I'm feeling extremely pleased with myself.
Also put down some psychedelic backing vocals on the outro of "Begging Bone" and they sound great.A very different kind of harmony than I've ever done before.I'm feeling pleased they worked out.
Wednesday 13th
I had the most incredible dream last night...........it's a bit of a long story so I shan't bore you with the details but suffice to say the closing statement out of the mouth of an oversize gorilla, addressing my dreamworld self was:
"Congratulations. The animal kingdom welcomes you as one of it's own." Hmmmnnnnn.....I dare not imagine what's going on in the deepest recesses of my subconcious.Thank god I'm going to see my shrink this week!!!!!!!!!
On an equally worrying note.....I've just finished making homemade christmas tree decorations with Wendy Schneider of Bugatti Type 35.(They're recording their new cd downstairs from us here at Smart Studios.)For two frighteningly strident females,we certainly can be icky-sweet when we set our minds to it. And on an even MORE disturbing note than that rather odious revelation about what two bored but creative women do whilst waiting for mixes to be printed and dinner to be served......can I just mention that I'm deeply disappointed that Bush is to be the new President of the United States of America.I can't think of a more unsuitable and dislikable character!
On the bright side,at least all this "Fight for the Whitehouse" nonsense will now come to an end and those revolting Republicans who have become omnipresent on our television channels of late, fully fitted with their unreasonable and bigoted points of view, will be forced to slide back to the holes from whence they came.
Talking of holes..............for the rest of the week we're concentrating on doing some speed mixes of all the tracks we've worked on thus far so we can take a cd home with us over the holidays and make our notes for future tweaking.(We all split for 3 weeks this Saturday.)
I managed to shove down some backing vocals at the very last minute on the chorus of "Drive You Home" tonight and they sound quite heavenly in the truest sense of the word.I sound just like a gaggle of little angels. Ha ha ha.......bet you can't wait to here that one!!!!!
Thurday 14th
Well............this will be my last entry until the new year seeing as I'm flying back to Scotland at the weekend.God I can't believe how long I've been here.It feels like centuries!
And yet I feel sort of excited because I know that next year will be absolutely NUTS and we'll finish the record and be out on the road and all this glorious down time will seem like a distant memory......so much so that six months into the tour I'll be desperate to make another record again despite swearing to the boys but a week ago that I never wanted to make another record again in my life.
Ha ha ha............
Yeah......whatEVER!!!!
Anyway....have a wonderful holiday season each and every one of you.
Keep safe.
