STUDIO DIARY #25 (November 2nd - 9th 2000)
Friday 3rd
(Listening to the new Outcast cd.It's really cheeky with once again,a bucket load of hooks. They're so gallous.)
Took a guitar lesson and pilates class this afternoon so my mindset is a little more positive than it has been of late.I just don't know what's wrong with me these days.I guess I'm just fed up of being in the studio and now that winter is approaching I'm growing ever more impatient with our snails pace in the studio.I feel sort of claustrophobic and panicky and desperate to get moving although moving where I know not........just anywhere but here. Ever noticed how much I use the words "I feel"??!!? It's weird the amount of times I use that expression.
But it's just that I do feel.
I feel so much that it hurts.
Saturday 4th
Woke up early and played the new PJ Harvey cd over and over ("We float" made me cry the first time I heard it.) whilst tidying up my hotel room. It's looked like a bomb had hit it ever since I returned from New York.
Feeling remarkably industrious,I then decided to also attempt to tidy up our big "rubbish" cupboard in the studio and found a whole host of treasures lurking in the dark corners! Like our long lost video recorder with all of the "home" footage of Garbage on tour in 1996!!! (God I looked so awful.) I found an original master copy of "Nevermind" on vinyl and even stumbled upon racy faxes to Butch from his girlfriend!
Oh the things you find when you least expect it.
Ha ha ha..........
We worked on some Beatles-like harmonies on the end of "Breaking Up The Girl" this afternoon. They sound really good if I say so myself. It's been a fantasy of mine to sing "oooh la la la ooh la la la" for quite sometime now!!!!!! I also worked on lyrics for a new song called "Pay you back" which I have an idea for but can't quite seem to nail down just yet.In addition I finalised the melody and lyrics on "I just don't care" which is a song we've had lying about since April but one which I've only just gotten around to working on in the last few days .I don't quite know how to explain how the song sounds but I have a really good feeling about it.(There I go with my "feeling' again!!!!) An EXTREMELY productive day all round!!!!!
Sunday 5th
Day off
Monday 6th
Oh it's so gloomy outside and it hasn't stopped raining all day. We're feeling lazy as hell and instead of doing any work we're all sitting in the big lounge upstairs watching tv and surfing on the computers. It's a pretty pathetic sight.
Daniel is returning to LA tonight which is a great pity. He's fun to have around and enhances the vibe considerably in the studio. Nearly puked up this morning when I saw those stupid Spice Girls on the front of USA Today.Has the world ever seen the likes?! I'm really sorry but I fail to see what GIRL POWER has EVER had in common with these idiotic clowns.I mean take Scary Spice for instance.............oh yeah right........really scary.
Baby SPice? What the fuck is THAT all about? Oh yeah I'm sure that her whole raquet did wonders for womankind.
Sporty Spice? Em....let's put it this way.I should be suing her ass. Wannabe? Yeah exactly.
Posh is ok I suppose. At least she's funny. But hell.....being POSH isn't exactly something one can aspire to, is it? Either you ARE or you're NOT. Let's face it.They're plain AWFUL.
Tuesday 7th
Oh by the way........couldn't help but notice Shawn Fanning's big corporate sellout the other day.Hmmmnnnnn......that's always nice isn't it? To see an "anarchistic man of the people" step away from his principles just like that.Bettcha he doesn't put HIS dollars from the deal on the web for us all to share.
Work in the studio has now come to a complete standstill as we sit glued to CNN and the Presidential Election Day of Reckoning. We are biting our nails and praying for the lesser of two evils.
Wednesday 8th
OK.Call me a cynic but I believe there has been some VERY shady business going down in Florida.Seems highly suspicious to me that the only state in America not to have a definitive vote count is the very state in which the governor just happens to be the brother of George W Bush!!!!!!
Hmmmnnnn........that's a very strange kind of coincedence is it not?!?!?!??!?! On a lighter note...I was weeding through all your album title suggestions this afternoon and some of them were really fantastic.Indeed some of them even made me laugh out loud but unfortunately the title was finally decided upon amongst the four of us late last night and I regret to inform you that it was one of my own suggestions that won out and not one of yours. I feel really rotten because you put forward some really good ideas but they just weren't quite what we were looking for.
But thanks again for all your help and input. You spoil us and we love you for it.

Thursday 9th
Finished "White Teeth" by Zadie Smith this morning and began "For Planets and Kings" by Ethan Canin.Oh there's nothing more lovely than starting a new book. "White Teeth" was enjoyable but I can't quite understand why Zadie Smith has been compared to Salman Rushdie. It's a somewhat ludicrous comparison if you ask me, based solely it seems on the fact that both authors are not white. Good grief. What a foolish world we live in.
And I so sick and tired of all the nonsense in Florida.Wish they could just call it quits and put Nader in the White House instead.
I'm consequently cheering myself up by playing "Relationship of Command" by "At the Drive in", at STUN volume on the Sound System in our upstairs lounge.
