just got back from AC. here's what happened. first of all if you go there don't stray too far from the boardwalk. comedian alan king said it best - "atlantic city is gorgeous....if you arrive by boat." got to trump taj mahal about 3:30 pm. ran into billy bush in the casino. so i knew right away shirley was there and there wouldn't be any last minute cancellation. went to the hard rock cafe in the hotel for lunch. brandon from incubus was there eating a veggie burger. the manager gave him his meal for free because he signed an autograph for his wife. met a pair of grabage fans from new jersey who wanted to meet shirley. met a trio of incubus fans who wanted to meet them. told them to go to the HRC cafe and they wound up meeting the whole band, so they were thrilled. met another woman who was a pretenders fanatic. she had a pair of $150 second row center seats she bought on auction from ticketmaster.com. she gave me her extra ticket. i gave her mine and she scalped it and i let her keep the money. seemed fair. so we're waiting in line to get in and somebody from the vh1 production crew started handing out bracelets to get into the pit in front of the stage. so i got to sit even closer. the show starts and incubus play two songs that i believe are from their upcoming album. then chrissie hynde came out and sang incubus' "drive" with them. then martin chambers came out and played "message of love". intermission. then the full band came out and played a bunch of pretenders songs. then they brought shirley out. she wore all black. shorts, heels, stockings and sleveless hoodie. she had her hair pulled back in a bun. basically she looked like a funkier version of how she looked in the "these things" video. i could tell when she walked she was nervous and apprehensive. you could see it on her face. once she started singing she loosened up. she even started smiling. she and chrisse did "talk of the town" and "kid". then the guys in the pretenders were noodling something familiar on their instruments and i knew they were about to kick into OHWIR. when they did it got a big reaction from the crowd. it was like the people who didn't know who shirley was said "oh, that's who she is". kings of leon and iggy pop were really good, but i'd seen what i wanted to see. luckily i stayed because everyone came out for an encore. all the singers took turns on "middle of the road". there were computer monitors at the foot of the stage scrolling the lyrics so the singers could read them. shirley was the only one not looking at them the whole time. so the show ends. i start wandering around the casino hoping to bump into shirley just to say hello. she signed enough things for me over the years. i wind up running into the two garbage fans and the three incubus fans in front of a bar that's been roped off by hotel security. i'd just missed chrissie going in. they said she was pretty curt to them. signed a couple of things but didn't talk to them. so we wait hoping the others might show up. not two minutes went by before shirley and incubus came down the hallway. nobody even had to ask. they came over to us. they signed autographs. took pictures. very cool. i was waiting at the end of the line of garbage fans. when shirley saw me she smiled and said "hey, how ya' doing" very enthusiastically and shook my hand with both of hers. i told her how great it was to see her and to hear her sing again. a little small talk. then she went on her way. i'd been up about 21 hours at that point. so that was pretty much the perfect ending to a long day.

Great report! I can't wait to see this performance on TV! I really hope to meet Shirley at least once in my life. I vowed that if she goes on tour for her solo album that I will travel to see her first concert in the states. I think that it is awesome that she recognized you! I remember you telling me that you had met Shirley and the boys before when standing in line during the Cleveland concert. I had met Duke after the Cleveland concert and I was absolutely speechless, I think I would start balling if I ever got the chance to meet Shirley. I guess my day will come...hopefully! Again, thanks for the report!!!

Wow, awesome report dupa! I'll bet you are on cloud nine now! I know exactly how you feel!
One question: did you or anybody else ask Shirley anything about her Solo project? Was anything mentioned at all during the concert about it? Was there any talk or rumors amongst the G fans about anything regarding Shirley's solo album?
Thanks again, great report!
Oh, one more question: Did any of the production folks there mention when it was going to air on t.v.?

it sounds like you had a great time; I would kill to see Iggy Pop live.
I was offered a pair of tickets to the show from my job but had to refuse them because I already was going to see Sonic Youth & the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in Brooklyn that night. I don't regret it because it was an amazing show, despite not getting to meet Thurston, Kim, Lee, Steve, and Marc as my freaky old man friend/connection promised me I would.

Dupa, you are so on the mark about AC, it is incredible to see such extreme glitz and poverty separated by only a block or two. But evyone muststill go there seeing how the ride that took 2 3/4 coming back on Saturday evening took over 4 1/2 on Friday. So instead of arriving at about 5:30-6 as I had planned, I checked into the Taj Mahal about 7:15. I figured then my chance of running into someone before the show had passed since it was so close to showtime. However, as I went to bring my bags up to my room I caught an elevator that was not going to my floor. So I quickly hit the button for the 14th floor which would let me catch the elevator to my floor. Their was a guy and his wife in the car with me. As quick as it took me to realize how much the guy tried to look like Iggy Pop the elevator arrived at the 14 th floor. I commented to him "Man, that was quick"and he agreed. Then the doors opened and standing there waiting to get on was Iggy himself. The guy must have known him because goes "What's going on, Jim" to Iggy.
I got to the room and went back downstairs to survey the lay of the land. While strolling through the casino I met two cute blonde Incubus fans who entertained me with their efforts to insert singles into a slot machine with a sign that clearly said "This machine accepts bills of the following denominations, %5,10,20". I guess I knew then the blonde hair was definitely not a dye job.
The show was really incredible. I had forgotten just how good the Pretenders are live. After the Incubus set, The Pretenders came out by themselves and tore into "The Wait". It was very reminiscent of their early years when they would open with that all the time. They also did "Day After Day", "Mystery Achievement", "A Night In My Veins", "Brass In Pocket" and "Back on the Chain Gang" solo.
Unfortunately, when Shirley was on stage that was a big distraction right in front of me. The woman in the seat right of front of me brought a stuffed dog and every time the boom camera swung by she would hold it up in the air. A guy in the row behind me tapped her on the shoulder and asked her to stop and then she went to the security guards and complained about the way he touched her and created a scene right in front of me during Shirley's piece. Shirley was amazing though especially during "Talk of the Town" which her and Chrissie sang together and you could not tell the difference between the two voices the were so alike. It ws great song selection for ToTT and OHWIR as those are two songs that normally lose a little something live by not having the backing vocals but they did in this case. I don't know if it was showmanship or not, but before "Kid" Chrissie joked with Shirley "We added a few that were not rehearsed".
the Kings of Leon did "Up The Neck" with the Pretenders and Iggy and Chrissy did an excellent version of "Candy" together.
I also went by the roped-off lounge after the show, but I remembered from my pre-show walkaround that the lounge was alot more open on the other side facing out towards the casino. I went to that side and was amazed the you could walk right in. I went to the bar and ordered a drink and a couple of minutes later there's Chrissie Hynde stading right next to me. Then a couple of minutes later Shirley appeared only a few feet away. I asked her if she would pose for a picture with me and she graciously agreed. She even volunteered to retake the photo when my eyes were closed in the first picture. Shw was every bit as sweet to everyone as everybody on this board says she is.
Shortly after, I actually made a quick trip back up to the room to drop some stuff and as I was walking back to the lounge I see Shirley and Chrissie running hand in hand off to the ladies room.
However, the truly memorable part of the night came near the end when the lounge band was ending their set and Chrissie Hynde went up to the stage and told them "No, you can; 't stop, I have some requests"! She talked them into keep playing and then went up on the stage and joined them for several songs including a rendition of "Car Wash".
Considering this and the stories I read here about the Vegas show, I have decided that when Shirley and/or Garbage goes on tour again, I will defintely make sure to catch any show in a casino. They tend to be a self contained city onto themselves and it's easy to find where the pre- and post-show action is.
I would say the ETA for the show is about 2 months as the Elvis Costello show was taped near the end of May and premiered near the end of July. The Bonnie Raitt show was just released on DVD with extra songs that were cut. Hopefully, they'll do that with tis show too as there was too much for 90 minutes with commercials.

Great report, Dupacrash! I'm so glad you got to meet Shirley again. I loved reading about her warm reaction when she saw you. Sounds like our girl! Even though I live in NYC, I had my family visiting from overseas so I couldn't go. It was killing me, but somehow reading about your experiences made me feel better. I think that goes for all of us who weren't there. Thanks for sharing!

awesome thread
It's a first-time read for my eyes. I came across it while running a search for "These Things" to see if anyone had posted an HQ video of "These Things" on this board.
