Details are scant at the moment, but Karin Dreijer Andersson-- onetime Honey Is Cool frontwoman and current female half of Swedish sibling synth-mongers the Knife-- has emerged with a nifty-looking solo project.
Fever Ray, as she's calling herself, plans to have an album out in early 2009 on Rabid Records [via PSL]-- which probably goes some to explain why the Knife haven't been up to much of anything in a while. Thus far Dreijer's only sharing one tease of a track, "If I Had a Heart (Instrumental Edit)", which hints at something slightly more organic than the frigid, nocturnal sonic landscapes occupied by Dreijer's other current project.

That Scandanavian electrogoth brother and sister duo are once again, delaying any news of a new album to follow up Silent Shout with the announcement that they have been invited by the Danish Hotel Pro Formato to write music and libretto for “Tomorrow, in a Year” a Darwin opera. Brother Olof Dreijer is now at a field recording in the Amazon to record animals, fish and plants and the premiere will take place in September 2009. Yes, you read that right. In the Amazon. From hotelproforma.dk: “In November 2009, it is precisely 150 years since Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species, a work that describes the biological and geological world, as it has come into existence and continues to do so every single day. Our view of the world has been changed for ever as a result of the theory of evolution. Tomorrow, in a year uses Darwin’s way of observing and describing the world. Change as a process and the interrelationship of all things is the basic material of the performance.” www.state.ie/blog/the-knife-writing-an-opera-no-really/Sounds interesting.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, make way for Fever Ray. The Knife's Karin Dreijer Andersson has lifted the shroud of secrecy surrounding her previously mentioned solo project to reveal a debut album due next year and a lead-off single due much sooner.
Get acquainted with Fever Ray by way of inaugural single "If I Had a Heart". You may recall we discussed the instrumental version of this track last time, and it's still available for streaming at the Fever Ray MySpace. Well the "If I Had a Heart" single proper descends on digital retailers December 16 in the U.S. (via Mute) and in Australia/New Zealand (via etcetc), and the day before in the Scandinavia (via Rabid) and the rest of Europe (via Cooperative Music). So many labels!
Meanwhile, a video for "If I Had a Heart", helmed by Knife/José González director of note Andreas Nilsson, should surface soon.
Karin's still keeping mum about the title and tracklist for her debut album as Fever Ray, but that set does have a release date. Or rather, several: March 24 in the U.S., March 23 in Australia/New Zealand, and March 18 in Scandinavia and the rest of Europe, with the same label distribution as above. So many places!
As if all that weren't exciting enough, here's Karin in the Fever Ray press release: "I hope that my newly found live band will make it to the stages next year. We are rehearsing and building something beautiful and brilliant." Keen!
The Knife, as you'll recall, are in the throes of writing music and words for an artsy opera loosely inspired by the theories of Charles Darwin. Alas, it is not titled On the Origin of Creepy.

In case you've been wondering what's been going on in the world of The Knife, wonder no more: Karin Andersson, the distinctive vocalist of the Swedish electronica duo, is doing her own thing. In fact, she's just released a debut single called "If I Had A Heart," under the new moniker, Fever Ray.
The track is a brooding moment of minimalist orchestration, though it fails to bloom into anything more tangible. "More, give me more," she moans in synch with her digitally altered lower register (as was done with many of the Silent Shout tracks), which is rather ironic, considering those were my sentiments exactly.
Go have a listen on her MySpace!

Karin Dreijer Andersson is one half of the Knife, whose Silent Shout was only our favorite album of 2006. As previously reported, the Swedish singer is going solo with her new project Fever Ray. Based on the so-eerie-you-really-need-to-watch-it-now video for first single "If I Had a Heart", fans of Silent Shout won't have a hard time loving Fever Ray's self-titled debut, out on CD March 24 in the U.S. (via Mute), March 23 in Australia/New Zealand (via etcetc), and March 18 in Scandinavia (via Rabid) and the UK/rest of Europe (via Cooperative Music). Don't feel like waiting that long to get lovingly creeped the fuck out? You're in luck-- the whole record will be available in the increasingly popular digital download format tomorrow, January 13. Yes, that's the day after today. Just stare at the album's cover up there-- featuring Andersson conjuring what looks like an emptied paper-towel roll-- until then... And, in case you thought "If I Had a Heart" wasn't compressed and distorted enough to get your nerd party going, there's still hope: Laptop terrorists Fuck Buttons have remixed the track, which will be available on the 7" single format, out February 10. Fever Ray: 01 If I Had a Heart 02 When I Grow Up 03 Dry & Dusty 04 Seven 05 Triangle Walks 06 Concrete Walls 07 Now's the Only Time I Know 08 I'm Not Done 09 Keep the Streets Empty for Me 10 Coconut www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/148409-download-the-knife-singers-solo-album-tomorrow

Her Fever Ray persona, though nearly indistinguishable from The Knife, is extremely intriguing. Love the album.

Follow the dripping foot: The Knife's Karin Dreijer Andersson sang on Röyksopp's 2005 single "What Else Is There?" Danish director Martin de Thurah directed that song's video, which is probably one of the best clips of the decade. That is not an exaggeration: it's the sort of video Björk used to make. (In it, a floating model sings Karin's part, but the mysterious Swede does show up with a haunting scowl about two-thirds of the way through.) So news of Andersson and de Thurah re-teaming for a new clip from Dreijer Andersson's Fever Ray project is oh so welcomed. De Thurah will direct the video for "When I Grow Up", a song in which Andersson sings about plant-sitting, facials, and boomerangs. It's not the most linear lyric. And de Thurah isn't the most linear lens man. Here's his equally abstract-but-brilliant treatment: "That initial idea was something about something coming out of water-- something which was about to take form-- a state turning into something new. And a double headed creature not deciding which where to turn. But the idea had to take a simpler form, to let the song grow by itself. I remembered a photo I took in Croatia two years ago, a swimming pool with its shining blue color in a grey foggy autumn landscape." Don't worry, it will be better than Lady in the Water. More good Fever Ray news: Dreijer Andersson is going on tour. Sure, it's a brief, eight-date tour that doesn't reach beyond Scandinavia. But, hey, maybe this is the beginning. The last time I saw Andersson on stage, she was behind a screen and wearing a mask. Well, I think it was her. Either way, she killed. Fever Ray dates: 03-19 Oslo, Norway - Parkteatern 03-20 Malmö, Sweden - Babel 03-21 Göteborg, Sweden - Storan 03-22 Copenhagen, Denmark - Vega 03-24 Helsinki, Finland - Tavastia 03-26 Stockholm, Sweden - Kägelbanan 03-27 Umeå, Sweden - Umeå Open 03-28 Luleå, Sweden - Kulturens Hus www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/149057-fever-ray-lines-up-tour-super-creepy-video
