How fucked up is this? Toys for Tots rejects talking Jesus dollsLOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A talking Jesus doll has been turned down by the Marine Reserves' Toys for Tots program. A Los Angeles company offered to donate 4,000 of the 1-foot-tall dolls, which quote Bible verses, for distribution to needy children this holiday season. The battery-powered Jesus is one of several dolls manufactured by one2believe, a division of the Valencia-based Beverly Hills Teddy Bear Co., based on biblical figures. But the charity balked because of the dolls' religious nature.Toys are donated to kids based on financial need and "we don't know anything about their background, their religious affiliations," said Bill Grein, vice president of Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, in Quantico, Virginia. As a government entity, Marines "don't profess one religion over another," Grein said Tuesday. "We can't take a chance on sending a talking Jesus doll to a Jewish family or a Muslim family." Michael La Roe, director of business development for both companies, said the charity's decision left him "surprised and disappointed." "The idea was for them to be three-dimensional teaching tools for kids," La Roe said. "I believe as a churchgoing person, anyone can benefit from hearing the words of the Bible." According to the company's Web site, the button-activated, bearded Jesus, dressed in hand-sewn cloth outfits and sandals, recites Scripture such as "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again" and "Love your neighbor as yourself." It has a $20 retail value. Grein questioned whether children would welcome a gift designed for religious instruction. "Kids want a gift for the holiday season that is fun," he said. The program distributed 18 million stuffed animals, games, toy trucks and other gifts to children in 2005. www.cnn.com/2006/US/11/14/toy.jesus.ap/index.htmlThis world is really fucked up if you cant even give away free Jesus Christ dolls on what is supposed to be his fucking birthday!
Oh it will offend someone! If you are offended by that then you shouldn't be celebrating fucking Christmas!
Merry fucking Christmas!
I will never give to Toys for Tots again!

Jesus was probably not even born on the 25th...besides doesn't the celebration stem from pre-christian winter festivals?

Jesus was probably not even born on the 25th...besides doesn't the celebration stem from pre-christian winter festivals? Origin and Evolution of Toys for Tots Colonel William L. Hendricks USMCR (Ret) Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. The idea came from Bill's wife, Diane. In the fall of 1947, Diane handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked Bill to deliver the doll to an organization, which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When Bill determined that no agency existed, Diane told Bill that he should start one. He did. The 1947 pilot project was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign. That year, Marine Corps Reserve units across the nation conducted Toys for Tots campaigns in each community in which a Marine Reserve Center was located. Marines have conducted successful nationwide campaigns at Christmas each year since 1948. The initial objective that remains the hallmark of the program today is to "bring the joy of Christmas to America's needy children." Bill Hendricks, a Marine Reservists on weekends, was in civilian life, the Director of Public Relations for Warner Brothers Studio. This enabled him to convince a vast array of celebrities to support Toys for Tots. In 1948, Walt Disney designed the Toys for Tots logo, which we use today. Disney also designed the first Toys for Tots poster used to promote the nationwide program. Nat "King" Cole, Peggy Lee, and Vic Damone recorded the Toys for Tots theme composed by Sammy Fain and Paul Webster in 1956. Bob Hope, John Wayne, Doris Day, Lorrie Morgan, Tim Allen, Kenny Rogers and Billy Ray Cyrus are but a few of the long list of celebrities who have given their time and talent to promote Toys for Tots. First Lady Nancy Reagan served as the national spokesperson in 1983. First Lady Barbara Bush served as the national spokesperson in 1992 and in her autobiography named Toys for Tots as one of her favorite charities. From: www.toys4tots.org/ORGIN_EVOLUTION.htmWho cares exactly when he was born. It is the day we celebrate his birth and you cant argue with what it says on the Toys for Tots website can we? They took everything he believed in and just shit all over it.

My problem with it is that as a society we have become so politically correct that it is infringing on other peoples belief structure to the point where they feel like outcasts in our society. It started with the "holiday tree" and now look where it has gone. Pretty soon there will be no Christ in Christmas and what will you be left with? Mas? Humph!

I get your point tnc...it's a crappy thing to do...Christmas is more a commercial enterprise than a religious observance nowadays.

I would have never wanted one as a kid but it just struck a nerve to know they didn't want to include it. Even as a good gesture. They are free afterall. Its not like Toys for Tots had to pay for them!

well if you didn't want one as a kid, what make you think these kids would want them? What did you get Timmy? "A Jesus doll...great...just what I always wanted."

Haha! Well shouldn't they leave that up to the parents as to what they think their kids might like. The parents don't have to take them. If they don't get used for Christmas then they can be given back to the company that made them in the first place.
Just to flat out turn them down because they were afraid to offend someone is just weak!

You should make your own organization (TnC™) and then you can give out all the Jesus dolls that you want.

That might be a good idea. Don't you remember that guy selling the piece of toast with the image of Jesus on ebay? If I remember correctly he made a hell of a lot of money on that. You see people would take the doll if it were free. You have these nuts spending a small fortune on a burnt piece of toast that has the likeness of Jesus on it. Anything could happen.

I would take the doll...of course, I'd probably end up sending it to Sarah, cause she needs it more than I do. ;D

Jesus was probably not even born on the 25th...besides doesn't the celebration stem from pre-christian winter festivals? Right Christ if is really existed should be born on april-march about X-mast origin en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YuleMike mmm a toy can't be so religius till you give to a more christian family could be ok as gift but...if are of another religions or are atheist is no right anyway is not a gift for a child Is very rare who child can apreciate this kind of gift i mean si not the car,the peluche, the dolls, is a thing more for a adult who really belif I'm agree sometime there is too political correct but if my parents gived me that kind of gift when i was a child...prob my face was ---> ----> ----> "The idea was for them to be three-dimensional teaching tools for kids," I think this kind of things should be choice after when is growen up enough to choice if belif on what and know a few all religions "I believe as a churchgoing person, anyone can benefit from hearing the words of the Bible."
Depend what kind of words you take from the Bible.... I don't like this kind toys seams maded to program ppl's i prefer toys who make grow the immagination where you can build something, expore..childhood should be free to things who can't let you free by adults things Is not better give a normal Barbie,Teddy Bear, Snoopy ,toycar ? I know on theory is b-day (looks the link up )and religius hollyday but i think is not a good gift for a child FallenAngel

How much do you want to bet they don't have a problem with these toys. GI Joe doll GI Joe promotes: 1. Trained killers 2. Death 3. War Yet they wont take a Jesus doll. The story of Jesus promotes: (even if you don't believe he ever existed) 1. Love 2. Peace 3. Hope Its kinda silly if you ask me.

I think they are just trying to be fair... if someone tried to donate a shit load of Mohamad dolls or something, they wouldn't take them either. But I agree it's pretty crappy how they will take the shoot-um-up dolls but not the let's-recite-bible-versus doll...

Jenna has a point. We don't know that all of the homeless people BELIEVE in Jesus Christ. Even when you don't have a home you ALWAYS have whatever your religious beliefs may be. I know I wouldn't care if Alexander got a talking Mohamed or Jesus doll (if we were homeless) but not everyone thinks like me. Can you imagine what a Hindi family would think if they recieved a Jesus Christ doll? I doubt there are alot of homeless Hindi people here in the U.S.A but you get my point, I hope.
I know it is the thought that counts but small points such as this should ALWAYS be taken into account befor hand.
Just my two cents worth.

I don't think they celebrate it, they go to get the FREE stuff for their children so their kids can fit in with society.
We have a Toys for Tots motorcycle run every year here in S.C. and we have alot of African Americans and Caucasians who have no religion but they come anyway. For them it's not celebrating a holiday, it's a chance to let their kids fit in and have fun.

Well it sounds like they should conform to our culture. We shouldn't be forced to conform to theirs. If they get something religious then its the parents problem not the charity that provided the "free" toys.
