Steve Irwin dead in stingray attack By 7News Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has been killed in a stingray attack near Cairns on Australia's far north coast. It was believed Irwin had been swimming off the coast of Cairns when he was stung. "It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest," Brisbane's Courier Mail reported this afternoon. Irwin was best known for his documentary series "The Crocodile Hunter". He was born in Victoria and found his love of animals after following in his father's footsteps, volunteering his services to the Queensland Government's East Coast Crocodile Management program. He spent years living on his own in the mosquito infested creeks, rivers and mangroves of North Queensland, catching huge crocodiles single-handed. In June 1992, he married American Terri Raines after they met when she visited Irwin's Australia Zoo. The 44-year-old is survived by his wife and two children, Bindi and Robert au.news.yahoo.com/060904/23/10ebv.html

i would never have thought it would be a sting-ray, but i'm not surprised the risks finally caught up to him.

I'm a little confused.
I hate that he got killed, but is this a GOOD thing for animals? or a BAD thing?
some people think he was harming animals and other people think he was helping animals.

it's sad to hear. i just saw the espn commercial where he wrestled the florida university gator mascot a few days ago. when i heard about this i thought of the movie about the guy who lived amongst grizzly bears in the wild for years and was eventually mauled to death by one of them. no matter how much control someone thinks they have, it's only a matter of time before one of them lashes out at you.

That ass hole with the bears Timothy Treadwell was a pain in the ass. He did good work but because he spent so much time with the bears the became used to people and would approach campers causing them to be shot. He fed the stray cat basicly and they viewed humans as a source to get food. I hate that fucker man he did more harm to bears than good.
As for irwin I always thought he was a douche he did good dont get me wrong. I think he did a good job with trying to help animals and that is great. Damn a sting ray bard through the heart.
I do think irwin did amazing things to help promote and protect animals and at the heart of it all that is what he wanted to do. Unlike Timothy Treadwell who many think did more harm than good.

Never really got into his programs.. to me they seemed more like bugging animals than trying to protect them. Maybe I just didn't get the point Can't say the news suprised me much.. still, a nasty way to go

To answer some HATE PM's.
Steve Irwin was on a mission to protect and research animals. He always had a large crew of vets, animal experts and groups who ensured that the animals were not harmed.
Timothy Treadwell was just a dick. It was his way or basicly fuck you. He would camp in the wilderness with the animals and make them accustomed to human contact. He never had any experts with him it was only him. He was killed by a bear as was his girlfriend who was with him.
He would brag about how he could hide from the rangers and evade them for months why he did his work.
Watch the show on him on discovery its called "Grizzly Man" he goes off on a tirade about how the parks services wont help him. Truth be told he did not want there help and did everhthing they told him not to do.
At least Irwin was out to document and research the animals and had a full staff with him to make sure they got all the information they could get.

Pretty sad news, he seemed like a pretty cool guy. He DID make shows about animals interesting again...and at least it wasn't those "redneck deer hunter" type of content. RIP. *pours out my 40 oz.*
