I think the heat got to it. It was 117 and I was using it inside all day. After the sun went down the temperture was about 105 so I sat down and used it for about 30 minutes. The cursor stated going sideways, then the laptop hung up. I let it sit for about 15 minutes to see if it was just doing something. Nothing. So I unplugged and took out tht battery to reset it. I was not able to turn it back on. I called Compaq and they told me over the phone how to reset it it further, and also had me reseat the RAM chips. Still nothing. So they are sending me a box to ship it to them for warrany repair. So looks like I'll be out of a computer at home for over a week. Maybe two at the most. They said it sounds like the motherboard crapped out. So now I am back at the library using theirs for two hours a day.

that sucks. every time i use my laptop i wonder if it might be the last. the three year service plan just ended. i had to use it several times so it was worth it. they sent me an form to renew the plan - 600 dollars for three more years. i figure i'll get a new one if this one craps out. i hope it doesn't come to that.

Dan, that totally sucks! You've just been a glutton for punishment lately, haven't you! Yea, you have to be careful about using laptop's because they are prone to overheating if not used carefully. Sometimes, something as innocent as putting the laptop on your lap will make it overheat. When you combine your own body heat with the probability of covering or inhibiting circulating airflow around the ports on it, it's easy to see why they overheat. I always put my laptop on a hard flat surface to ensure it get's plenty of ventilation. That sure could have been a heat related problem, especially if you used it outside any at all. Hope you get it fixed soon!

The box should be here today. I called them on Sunday. I wish FedEx worked on Sunday so the box was here yesterday.

From what I remember they were really fast in gettingn the system working again. I have no idea what they did but they fixed it. That has to suck to have your system down.

The powercord died a little while ago I fixed that myself with a soldering iron, and some heat shrink tube. I hope they don't try to blame it on that for it dying.

i remember I was fussing with the firmware and the OS and really just screwed the whole thing up. I think all they did was zap my HD and rebuild the load set. I acted all stupid about it but I know it was my fault. Then again that is what warranties are for.

There is 124 days left on the warranty. That was the first thing they looked up based on the serial number. Maybe they want the cord because it won't power up. I think it just overheated and some thermal fuse opened up to save the mother board.

My laptop better stay alive forever. I'd die if it died. I sent in a computer to Gateway three years ago... It tooko six weeks for them to send it back. It was just a blown fan. I'll never get another Gateway computer for as long as i live.

Compaq said should be 5 - 7 days max. I am not sure if that includes shipping time or not.

I've seen a lot of hard drive failure just recently on Compaq's. Have two at the house right now that we cannot even recover the data from.... I've always had good luck with Dell Laptops...

I am not sure what the problem is. It did have a week or so ago when it started up it acted like the first time I ever used it. No desktop icons, also said I need to register my version of Windows, and so on. I rebooted it and it came back the normal way. I guess I'll know soon what the problem is.

Laptops are a pain when it comes to working properly. At least that has been our experience. My wife's Toshiba has been in for service SIX times in less than two years. It's in service right now (been for 3 weeks).
