STUDIO DIARY #21 (October 6 - 12, 2000)
Friday 6th
You know....you learn something new every day!!!!! All my life I thought that the phrase was "for all intensive purposes" but indeed that is not the case as I'm sure many of you out there are already aware being much smarter and better educated than I. It's "for all intents and purposes"!!!!!. Ah well...I shan't let a little misunderstanding like that get me down. Certainly such ignorance doesn't seem to deflate George W. Bush and his lobbying cronies in any such way shape or form and he's running for PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES?!?!??!?!?!?!.
(Shum mishtake shurely.)
We had a bit of a washout today in terms of recording although I did manage to shove a lovely intimate whispery vocal break down on "Untouchable" which helped us finalize an arrangement on that song once and for all!!!
It's all about the baby steps in life my friends. It's all about the baby steps.
Saturday 7th
Practiced my guitar for two hours this morning like the good little soldier I am before heading out to see "Meet The Parents" with Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro and I have to confess I laughed my head off. It's not the deepest of movies but if you're in the mood for a chuckle then that's the movie for you. Feeling horrible about the escalating violence between Israel and Palestine and wondering why human beings have to HATE so intensely? It really is truly pathetic.
And seeing the latest footage from Yugoslavia makes me feel sort of elated (belated power of the people and all that) but also desperately sad that things had managed to spiral so out of control and now the country is crippled and corrupted and bereaved. I have all these really evil, revengeful thoughts and fantasies relating to Milosevic. I'd love to see him hanging from a tree with his genitals in his mouth or burned at the stake and screaming for mercy.
But then I feel deeply ashamed of myself for such imagined cruelty realising that it is exactly that same kind of thinking that can lead to the worst kind of atrocities known to mankind and I have to take a deep breath and practice tolerance.......believing in atonement and redemption.
Sunday 8th
Day off
Monday 9th
I see that poor old Drew Barrymore pulled the short straw in the Charlie's Angels Action Figures Campaign. The resemblance of aforementioned doll to a fat and scary granny is quite uncanny!!!!! No sign of the absolute fox that she happens to be. I LOVE Drew to pieces and she deserves a better effort than that. If I was her I would demand a recall!!!!!!
Ha ha ha..........
Tuesday 10th
In the studio at 11:30 am which is early for me. Spoke with my wee sister on the telephone for about an hour and giggled myself silly.
Here is a favourite quote of mine. I have it stuck inside my vocal booth for inspiration.
"It happens that one feels that something has remained between the fingers, that there are still some words that want to find their way into sentences, that one has not yet finished emptying the pockets of the soul. But it is useless. There will never be a postscript that can contain so many nightmares and so many dreams."
- JOHN BERGER
Oh don't you just think that's so divine? It makes me tingle inside whenever I read it. I just find it so comforting! The idea that there is no such thing as finality, no closed book, no destination, no death. Just simply an exploration, a journey, an adventure.
Wednesday 11th
Have I told you yet just how adorable Steve's little girl is? I can hardly articulate just how WONDERful she is. How perfectly pure and angelic, soft and innocent she is. How she can turn you into toffee just by looking you in the eye and giving you one of her gummy smiles. (Actually she already has two teeth and is eating green beans and prunes off a spoon.)
And whenever she holds my finger in her hot little hand, I keep having to fight off the urge to pack her into my handbag. I secretly wish she was mine. Ghastly news of the day: I saw this news piece on tv last night which talked about urinal incontinence in women who drank a lot of coffee!!!!!!!
YIKES
Am I going to start pissing my pants in a few years time if I drink too much coffee?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Oh say it's not so.
Thursday 12th
Not a lot of energy going around the studio today besides the consumption of large and extremely yummy black bean and sweet potato burritos which Duke's lovely girlfriend brought over for us.
I guess we did work on a brand new song this afternoon called "Afterlife" which already sounds pretty cool just with guitar and vocals on it so that's a good sign. At least we're getting somewhere.
The new Beatles Anthology arrived via Amazon.com this morning and I've had my nose in and out of it all day. I just cannot put it down.
And I can't stop leering at how beautiful John and George look in some of the photos.
They make me swoon and think filthy thoughts.
