Hey Garbagians, great to hear you're working on a new album! Can't wait until i'm able to improve my cd collection with another one of yours. Anyway, how computer-literate are you guys? Also, do have any plans on making the new album an enhanced cd with pictures/vidoes/etc you can view when put into a computer? Good luck recording. mostejo Dear mostejo We're fairly computer literate and obviously we bring that bent to everything we do. We have some special little plans for our next cd release but you'll just have to wait and see what that might be!!!! Thanks for the good wishes!!! Keep your fingers crossed for us will you? Ta. Shirleyx---------------------------------------------------------------------Hello, As I'm sure you're used to hearing by now, Thank You. Your music is great fun, and also a serious personal artistic influence. Keep it up. On your website, you all (and shirl in particular,) mention your continual appetite for something good to read. Just a quick suggestion on that note: The Authority. It's an absolutely brilliant comic book created by a Brit madman named warren Ellis. The first twelve issues of the comic, which should be easy enough to find, are all about changing the world, a chain-smoking 100 year-old british bad-ass, parallel realities, big screen action and liberal political views undeniably run amok. Very good, very dark stuff. Good luck on the album, the pilates, and for Steve, the new kid. -Graham Eason NolanDear Graham Eason Nolan Thanks for "The Authority" tip.I'll be sure to check it out.It sounds intriguing!!!! Shirley-----------------------------------------------------------------------I was reading through the site and I looked at the diaries and I saw some cool music that Shirley was talking about (elatica's new CD etc...) so on the subject of that I was wondering if she had also heard of a group called Delerium...they had a great sort of ambient trance sort of CD that they released a few years ago called Karma...anyway I was just wondering that and to see if she also liked that... stpalcDear stpalc I have not heard of Delerium.I'll be sure to give them a listen. Thanks for the suggestion. Shirley x-----------------------------------------------------------------------Hey there. You rock. I love all you've done and look forward to what's to come. But I was wondering if you have any tours of your Smart Studios? I have been interested in the whole music biz and was wondering if I could get a tour and see how stuff works. Love always, Erin from Michigan Dear Erin from Michigan Unfortunately we don't run tours of our studio although I am sure that there are other studios out there who do. Studios are drop dead boring anyhow. Shirley x----------------------------------------------------------------------Ok, I got two things. First off.. I work for Atrixo (who recorded at Smart, I'm SURE you know who they are). I'm thier guitar tech, and I'm just impressed at how they were able to craft their sound at Smart, so props to you guys for having such a badass studio. Second... I'm in a band called Reactor #04 out of Chicago (http://listen.to/reactor04). My girlfriend just reminded me about when we saw you live on the Version 2.0 tour, you had a plexiglass micstand custom built to your height and whatnot. WHERE DO I GET ONE?!! I was thinking about making one, and i looked up on the internet under "custom mic stands" and couldn't find anything. Could you give me a phone number of a company that makes them, or just tell me where you got them? They're friggin' badass. Love, P. Griffin Baron Reactor #04Dear P. Griffin Baron from Reactor #04 My mic stand was custom made by a friend of mine (as a favour) to my own specifications.Unfortunately he does not make them up commercially although I'm sure any company that deals in plexi-glass would happily make one up for you. Good luck with your band my friend. Shirley x----------------------------------------------------------------------hi, my name is adam and i live in howell, New Jersey. There is a new local band that has just arrived and they recently opened up for Veruca Salt here. There name is Union Spirits. Their web address is www.unionspirit.com. There CD is excellent!!! They are a perfect band to open up for you!!! I think you should try to get a hold of their CD's. Thanks for being a great band and ill see you on your next tour. adam cohenDear Adam Cohen We'll will check them out. Thanks. Shirley x----------------------------------------------------------------------Hi, this one's directed to Shirley: I am your average white over 30 male. I don't like rap music in general (there are a few exceptions which I will get to) and I love Garbage. I've been watching Emimem's videos on Much Music and was intrigued enough to purchase the Marshal Mathers Lp. I listened to it a few times and liked it very very much with the exception of certain tunes like Stan (suicide and murder) and Kim (Mathers kills his wife) and the skits, which are not fun at all. What suprises me is how much I like the rest of the album ( to the point where it was on constant play on my car cd player). I want to know Shirley: have you had a chance to listen to that album and what is your opinion of it? I ask because it is exacltly the type of music that in general offends me and every value I hold true and yet I like the album. I wonder if you have the same reaction? Huge Fan, Shane Murphy Toronto, Ontario, CanadaDear Shane Murphy from Toronto, Ontario, Canada I LOVE Eminem and infact I consider his latest cd to be a masterpiece. >From a different age I know.....a completely different time and setting......but it's a great FOLK record in the tradition of Hank Williams and Muddy Waters etc etc. It's GENIUS.That's what it is. You have exquisite taste! Shirley xPs.There's no such thing as average!

Garbage, I read the posting on the tour diary a few months ago that you might have a photo shoot with Hype Williams. How did that turn out? I heard he is starting to branch out into photography, should be interesting to see what he does with that, given his success with music videos. I would love to see him direct the video for your first single off the new album. By the way, LOVED your Version 2.0 cd! I listen to it over and over and over and over without getting sick of it! I'm sure your next one will be wicked too. Jey Ottawa, Canada
Dear Jey of Ottawa, Canada Unfortunately the Hype Williams shoot got blown out for the time being as his schedule was crazy and so was mine.He was supposed to shoot photographs of me (along with some of his other favourite female artists ) for what was going to be his first public foray into photography.I'm hoping we'll get to reschedule the shoot sometime later on this year as I am DYING to work with him. Shirley x

Hey Shirley.... I am from Australia and saw you live in the States and when you were here with Alanis twice. You guy's were awesome and I can't wait till you start to tour again. There is an Australian band called Killing Heidi with their debut album Reflector that I think you might be interested in hearing. I am pretty sure they are your type of music. Ella the lead singer is only 17 and has the most amazing voice (Not as good as you though). I personally love the song(s) Leave me alone and Class celebrities... Check them out and tell me what you think please. I can't wait for your new album....keep up the great work. Lots of Love, Jodi xxxx
Dear Jodi I will definitely check out "Killing Heidi".I like their songs titles already!!!!! Shirley x
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
To the most lovely garbage, Wow! This is exciting! Thank you for well, existing and making these delicious records. My question(s): I was wondering: 1) if you liked the band Air 2) what your fav NIN track on The Fragile is (just for fun) 3) what could be the most annoying way a fan could approach you or has approached you? 4) One more for Shirley: Do you find it weird or funny that some fans online now refer to you as just Shirl? Thanks for listening and best of luck on recording the new disc! ~Elise P.S. I love the studio diaries. They're great and they really crack me up too. I tell all my friends to read them.
Dear ~Elise I think it's adorable that our fans call me Shirl. It's preferable to asshole. Ha ha Shirley x
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Shirley, I just wanted to say thanx for mentioning in Studio Diary #13 about going into therapy. I'm on a waiting list myself and flip between total fear of needing that kind of help and an eerie relaxation felt when thinking about having someone to discuss things that I don't trust anyone else with. And like you, my friends also think I'm crazy and constantly tell me so...not always joking!!! I think if more people admitted to having therapy, there wouldn't be such a stigma attached to it...I'm not ready to admit it yet! Nicola (Essex)
Dear Nicola (Essex) Going into therapy was truly a GLORIOUS experience and a much welcomed release for me.I'm sure it will be for you too.Just as you must keep an eye on your physical health so too must you keep an eye on your mental health. And remember......a stigma is only a stigma if you let it affect you "that" way.Don't worry about what other people think. It's what YOU think that's important. Good luck Shirley x
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Shirl: In the studio diary #6, you mention on Thursday 18th that you "drank way too many Champagne Margaritas". I know you had a massive hangover, but I've never heard of this drink, and to me it sounds delish! Do you have the recipe? Thanks if you can get it from your bartender. XXOO Calvin Charlotte, NC
Dear Calvin of Charlotte, NC I don't have the measurements but it's basically Tequila and Champagne and Triple sec.You know.....just use your imagination.Do it YOUR way. Shirley x
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I heard a rumor (im hoping its only a rumor) that Shirley is leaving garbage. is this true or just one of those nasty rumors put out there to scare us fans into buying all the garbage stuff we can while we can ^_^ btw i saw your florida show in 97. avsolutely awesome. Let me know the rumors a lie!!!!! btw do you ever plan on doing stuff with angelfish in the future shirley? even thou i like garbag better i can never get enough of your voice. Terrence lee
Dear Terrence Lee Just for the record........I will NEVER and I mean NEVER record with ANGELFISH ever again. Secondly......I have absolutely no plans to leave GARBAGE at this juncture in time!!!!!!!! Worry not. Shirley x
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Garbage Crew, Your recent announcement concerning the b-sides album has driven me to do some bad things. I'm a longtime fan, and just couldn't handle the fact that I wouldn't be able to get those songs on my shelf yet. So, I Napstered a bunch of them (Driving Lesson, Thirteen, Deadwood, the Massive attack Remix etc., 14 total) and burned them on a private collection of b-sides and remixes. Am I a terribly wicked person? Since I own your previous albums and will definitely buy all the future ones, I don't feel like I had done a crime against humanity or anything. I'm not not going to distribute the collection to anyone (Hey, it's for my Private enjoyment) , and will naturally buy the real b-sides cd the minute it hits the stores. What do you think? Is this just fandom, or blatant piracy? I would love to hear your opinion on this and the whole Napster thing. And if you disapprove of this, I'll gladly smash the cd into pieces with a big hammer.. you're one of my all-time fave bands, after all. Thanks for your time, Janne Finland
Dear Janne from Finland No you are not an evil or wicked person just because you have downloaded our B-sides from Napster. Not even in the slightest.By reading your adorable E-mail I would hazard a guess that you are infact an absolute angel and if you were here by my side at this very instant in time I would kiss you on both cheeks and squeeze your hand. Don't worry so much about things!!!! It all comes out in the wash doesn't it? Shirley x

Dear Garbage (my absolute favorite band!), My question is regarding Track 8 on the Version 2.0 cd, The Trick is to Keep Breathing. I read on a website a few months ago that you based this song off of a book of the same title by Janice Galloway. I recently read this book and it would be an understatement to say that I thouroughly appriciated it. I was wondering if what I read on the site was in fact true--Was the song truly based off of this book or did someone make a mis-statement that luckily allowed me to happen across the book? I'm very excited to hear of a new album in the making and will always be a garbage fan! ~Kristin ;-)
Dear ~Kristin ;-) I am delighted that you enjoyed "The Trick is to Keep Breathing".It's a great book isn't it? It is indeed true that I ripped the title off and used it in the context of our song.I did however ask the permission of Janice Galloway (the author) to use it so I don't feel like I did anything horribly wrong.Infact she was delighted!!!!! Shirley x
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Shirley: Though you should know - though you probably already do - that you're fast becoming a major gay icon. And no, it's NOT the usual shtick - you know, gay boys that want to BE the female rocker. This time around, with you, it seems like ALL the gay men I talk to want to sleep with you (myself included)! As far as I know, this is a first. Have any thoughts about this phenom? :) Michael xxxxooo
Dearest Michael Well honey........I'm lost for words. The idea of being a Gay Icon is so utterly THRILLING to me because the gay community always pick such great icons in my opinion so I would be EXTREMELY flattered if I had indeed made the grade. As for ANYONE who harbours the desire to sleep with me...........whether they are gay,straight,bisexual,WHATEVER.......let me set the record straight. If you actually MET me.......you wouldn't want me in your bed.BELIEVE ME!!!!!!!! Ha ha ha............. Shirley x
----------------------------------------------------------------------
in the pics saction i saw steve playing a black gibson what kind of gibson is it? Yolanda Hamanie
Dear Yolanda Hamanie The black guitar you have seen Steve playing is not infact a Gibson but a "Bluesbird" made by Guild Guitars. Shirley x
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey, My name is rose and the other day I was just playing around with the whole nepster thing...which i don't quite understand ..but ne ways..i ran across a song that is a duet with korn and garbage of the song freak on a leash...was that made with one of those new computerized things or did the band and korn get together? i lov u guys so much!, Rose Byrne
Dear Rose Byrne The track you are referring to is actually a REMIX of Freak on a Leash by Butch Vig,our drummer in Garbage.Hope this answers your question Rose. Shirley x
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is for Shirley, I could not help but notice you recommending cd's in you studio diaries. There is a bad I think you and the guys should check out. Trance To the Sun, and the CD Venomous Eve. It is one of the most beautifully evil sounding things I have ever heard. Bit of a contradiction there. The Cd is amazing the textures and tones they accomplish are at times heart braking. Give it a listen. Thanks Paul By the way you are a goddess, who needs abs of steel?
Dear Paul I do believe that someone else.....or maybe it was even you.....I can't remember....but certainly Trance to the Sun has already been recommended to us!!! But thanks anyway for the suggestion. Obviously there are other people out there who are into the band too!!! Shirley x
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey Garbage crew, Love your music, and since you're always recommending music for the fans to pick up, I thought I'd see if any of you had heard the On album (Shifting Skin) yet. If not, you ought to check it out, Ken Andrews would be a great opening act for you. jwsimms
Dear jwsimms We'll be sure to check it out! Thanks. Shirley x
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Guys and gal, I've been reading the studio diaries you've posted. Haven't heard mention of "Silence Is Golden". I heard you play it three times in a week last year on the Campus Invasion tour. It sounded great to me. Hope it makes the cut for the next record. Bruce
Dear Bruce I'm delighted that you liked "Silence is Golden" as it is definitely going to be on the new record.I love that song. It's my favourite Garbage song ever!!!! Shirley x #nosmileys

Check out this great band I discovered. Snake River Conspiracy. www.snakeriverconspiracy.com check out Vulcan, Lovesong (cure cover), and How Soon is now (smiths cover) Later Ciff (aka raging pacifist)Dear Ciff (aka raging pacifist) Okay Dokey. Will do. Especially as they have such good taste in covers! Shirley x----------------------------------------------------------------------Hi guys and Shirley I have some questions for you. 1. What do you think about the fan web sights? (shameless plug http://www.axisallareas.com)2. What are your thoughts on the people such as my self who have huge collections of garbage memorabilia? 3. Would you ever consider doing a Fan Fair for Garbage fans like other bands do from time to time?4. For the debt album the singles were (Very) unique such as the metal Vow single, Queer in the plastic case, and Milk with the hologram thing. Are there any plans in the works for the singles for the new album? Chris Dallas, Texas Dear Chris from Dallas, Texas1. Most of the Garbage fan sites out there put our official one to shame. What more can I say except THANKYOU to all of you out there who are keeping the faith. We love you.2. I think you're all crazy!!!!!! ha ha ha.........3. What on earth is a Fan Fair?!?!?!?!?!?!4. Every time we release a single we focus on doing something unique with the packaging. On our debut album we released 7" vinyl. On our 2nd record we released tiny 3" cd's in super cool icon identified packaging. On our 3rd album we will definitely be doing something special but we haven't gotten around to thinking about that yet.Any ideas?!?!?!??! Shirley x ----------------------------------------------------------------------Hey Guys How is the album making going, how was the holiday Shirl? Anyway, me and my friend Bex really love garbage especially Only Happy When It Rains! we really like making shot films, so we decided to make a video to Only Happy When It Rains, Bex as you!, we made card board guitars and smashed them up, we used loads of Tin Foil, We tried to make it look a bit like your one, but also trying to make it our own! Every one down my road who has seen it thinks its really good. If your want me to posted you the video then I will, (I don't know how much it would cost to send it to you in the US) it would be in PAL instead of NTSC, but I guess you have PAL players in the US? JAMES Bucks England Dear JAMES of Bucks,England Yeah we have PAL players in the USA.Maybe you could send it on to someone at our label in the UK.We'd get to see it eventually. It sounds brilliant.I'd love to see it! I love the idea of your cardboard guitars. You sound highly creative!!!!! Shirley x -----------------------------------------------------------------------for shirley and the boys: My name is sabrina and i'm getting married soon. Me and my fiancee love Garbage! We met in college and he said that seeing a Garbage poster on my wall helped give him courage to talk to me! We have been together 4 years and have been to 2 of your concerts together. We plan to use a Garbage song as "our song" at our wedding but we haven't decided on which one... Any suggestions? We love you guys and really think that you played a role in bringing us together. Love from Los Angeles SabrinaDear Sabrina Either "Get bizzy with the fizzy"(obscure B-side) or "Milk" or "You Look So FIne" (Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston played it at THEIR wedding!) I'm sure you'll have a WONDERFUL day regardless of what music you choose! Shirley x-----------------------------------------------------------------------hey guys. i just finished cutting a record down at cue recording studio in falls church, VA and discovered some of your reels there. just out of curiosity, what songs are those the reels for, and did you record them at cue? if so, which studio, when, all that kind of stuff. i was just really shocked to hear you guys had recorded there. i've been a huge fan since your early years and it felt good following in your footsteps. anyway, write back if you get the chance. good luck with the new album. willDear will Congrats on finishing your new record. As for Falls Church,VA.........we've NEVER been there so I'm dubious as to whether they are actually OUR reels or not.But thanks for the question anyway!!! Shirley x-----------------------------------------------------------------------Hello all! My question is for Butch-I know that you graduated with a film degree in college. I was wondering if you ever had any ambition to write a film. You seem like an all around talented guy and i'm sure you could come up with a pretty kick ass film idea. i was also wondering why you chose music production over film. I love your all your videos, and enjoy making up my own when i hear your music. Keep up the good work!!! Mich Daytona Beach FLDear Mitch of Daytona Beach FL When I was studying film at the UW Madison, I took several semesters of electronic/ experimental music composition. I ended composing pieces for quite a few of my fellow students, and the time spent in the recording studio in Vilas Hall encouraged me to start Smart Studios after graduation. I am still very interested in film, and hope to compose a soundtrack someday, either on my own or with Garbage. Thanx... Butch-----------------------------------------------------------------------hi shirley, i have a "what if" question. let's say that all of a sudden britney spears or christina aguilera or whichever musician(s) you are not too fond off, said that they were your idol or that garbage is they're favorite band? would you change your opinion about them? anyways, i'm not a fan of either of those. i love GARBAGE! You are my favorite band and you will be till the day i die. Leitz Dear Leitz It wouldn't matter a jot if Christina Aguilera claimed she loved Garbage.I'd still think she was a horrid little squirt. Hee hee....... Shirley x

Greetings Garbage! You all pretty busy from what it sounds like on your site, but I wanted to know if you've heard of a band called HOOVERPHONIC??? If so, what do you think of their music? Reason I ask is that a lot of other Garbage fans I chat with seem to be dropping the name of this band when we are talking about Garbage and other bands. The opinions on the band seem to be quite overwhelming and was wondering what you all think about this band. I checked out the band's web site and saw that you (Garbage) played a Belgian festival with them back in 98 called Tourhout-Werchter (sp?) Cheers! Atomic55
Dear Atomic55 Of course we know who Hooverphonic is!!!!! And yes....we do like them.Quite a bit actually. What great taste you have dear!!!!! Shirley x
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey Shirley, I, like yourself, am an avid book reader, and I was wondering what books you'd recommend. What are some of your favourite books/authors and what are they about? What types of books do you usually love? Thanx so much and I'd really like to say that I think it's incredible of you guys to answer your fan's e-mail and correspondance. I'm a big fan. Luv, Hayley P.S- one author that I absolutely love and you may want to check out is Michael Ondaatje. His writing is stunning and poetic and mesmerizing and you might enjoy his books. Bye!
Dear Hayley I love the fact that you are into Michael Ondaatje.I agree that he is indeed a poetic and majestic writer!!!!! My favourite Ondaatje novel is "The Collected Works of Billy the Kid". It's hard for me to suggest books for you to read seeing as I have no idea of your taste in literature but how about "Therese Raquin" by Emile Zola or "The Tin Drum" by Gunter Grass or "She's come undone" by Wally Lamb or "All the Pretty Horses" by Cormack McCarthy or "I was Amelia Earhart" by Jane Mendelson or "The Hours" by Michael Cunningham or "The New Confessions" by William Boyd or "The Butcher Boy" by Patrick McCabe or "The Black Dahlia" by James Ellroy or "Geek Love" by Katherine Dunn or " Purple America" by Rick Moody or "Vanished" by Mary McGarry Morris. Hope you enjoy some of these suggestions.I've tried to give you a varied selection!!!! Shirley x
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Let me just start out by saying that I am a MASSIVE Garbage fan... Keep the kick-ass moozic coming! ...So my questions are: I was so delighted to see my two obsessions appearing at SNL together! I've worshipped Drew Barrymore since I was in the 7th grade and the Garbage orange globe is the center of my universe! Did you guys all hang out afterwards with Drew? Do you remain in any kind of contact with her? Shirley, you have an amazing fashion sense- What's your favorite apparel to wear while you travel? Do you dress like you do onstage, in magazines, etc. on the tourbus and at home? And how much must I pay you, sexxxy Shirley, to say, "Sarah Goodwin, I love you!!!"? A very loyal fan, Sarah in Memphis, TN
Dear Sarah in Memphis, TN Thanks so much for the sweet E-mail!!!! I LOVE the fact that you are a Drew Barrymore fan. She's ADORABLE isn't she?!?!?!?! Unfortunately we didn't get to hang with her after the show.We had to go off to a private party and she was flying out to LA to attend some award show. We did however talk with her during the filming of SNL and she was a complete lamb so you can be rest assured that your idol is worthy of your devotion. Shirley x
---------------------------------------------------------------------
well, you asked your fans to please keep you posted on bands we've been listening to that we'd recommend, so here goes: 1) snow patrol, album: songs for polar bears 2) idaho, album: the forbidden ep 3) slowdive, album: souvlaki (i'm sure you know of slowdive, but thought i'd mention them anyway) 4) mineral, album: the power of failing 5) 764-hero, album: get here and stay 6) bedhead, album: transaction de novo i hope there's at last ONE new and appealing band here for you precious kiddies! arrivederci, Lisa
Dear Lisa I have heard Snow Patrol (they used to be on the same label as me),idaho and Slowdive. However I haven't heard of the other 3 records you suggested so I will be sure to check them out!!!!! Thanks for the recommendation!!!! Shirley x
--------------------------------------------------------------------
This question will concern all the band I think. I'm wondering if you guys have heard about, mucked around with or actually used a Line 6 - "POD" (guitar amp emulator). I had a trash on one the other day, and was very impressed. What do you think? Also a technical question. When recording guitar tracks do you mic up your amps or direct input (i think that's the technical term)? Its also good to see you taking the time to correspond with fans and letting us inside your studio(keeping it real). Eargerly awaiting your next album.(very very eagerly) Gilbey (New Zealand)
Dear Gilbey... We use the Line 6 Guitar Pod, and Bass Pod, and Modulation Modular. But we run the all sorts of things thru them: guitars, keys, bass, loops and vocals...whatever sounds cool! We also use a lot of amps with the guitars: Matchless, Fender, and Vox AC30's being our favorites! thanx... Butch
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I just want to say you are such a good performer. I have two questions for you, How do you fell about the "work for hire" law being changed? And have you heard Nina Gordons Solo work? She used to be in Veruca Salt and I was so upset when she left, but I think her solo work is great. AMTIWBG
Dear AMTIWBG Nina Gordon is managed by the same people who manage us.I'll be sure to pass on your good wishes. Shirley x
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good Morning/Evening/Whatever One band you might want to check out is Godspeed You Black Emperor, They're a really great instrumental band from Montreal that make some of the most beautiful music i have ever heard in my life, picture a sound track to life's darker side. now some questions: How long does it usually take you to record a track? Do you believe in reincarnation, if so, what do you think you were in a past life? And finally, what do you think of the state of music today? Personally i think it's horrible. If you you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be? Thank you!, Poisoned Boy
Dear Poisoned Boy I agree with you....Godspeed You Black Emperor make wonderful, beautiful music.have you checked out Grassy Knoll? And now to your questions: 1.We can record a track in a matter of an hour or we can take weeks tinkering around on a song. Our approach is different depending on what each individual song requires. 2.If I could change one thing about the music industry I would shoot all the lawyers, the accountants, the pen pushers, the hypocrites and the sychophants. 3.No I do not believe in reincarnation. 4.Yes....the music scene is pretty brutal right now but there are still great records being made. You just have to look a little harder to find them!!! Don't despair darkling. Shirley x

Shirley, Just read your holiday itinerary, so now I'm sure that was you in the gift shop at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.(I got absolutely no support from my wife and kids). I agree the left coast is painfully beautiful, but the traffic makes me glad to get back to Madison. Nice to see you can get out in public without being mobbed. Good luck on the next CD. I for one can't wait. Dave Wegner
Dear Dave Wegner Yes that was indeed me in the Monterey bay Aquarium!!!!! ha ha........ Thanks for the good wishes Shirley x
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
hey everyone...just wanted to say i love the music. love every song. i just have really one main question...got any suggestions on drum machines? i use mainly my sampler and a couple drum machines but is there really any favs. you have? anyways, keep detroit in mind on your next tour! matt function7
Dear Matt of function7 We use the Akai MPC 2000XL with a lot of custom samples, and I love the way it sounds. I also play a lot of live drums, as well as program loops in ProTools, the Kurzweil K2500, and the Unity DS1 Software Sampler. A lot of the new songs have various combinations from all of the the above...whatever sounds cool! Good luck with the grooves! Butch
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings shirley and fellows, I just read your latest posting about the 32 songs being cut down to 9 and i have one thing to say: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! double cd!! (ok thats 2 things) you gotta throw us fans a bone here, we need at least 12 songs. 18 would be great. hell even all 32!!! I cant keep up with buying all the imports for the b sides...it gets kinda expensive (though i will still do it...damn my obsession!) ok I just wanted to put my 2 cents in....oh a title for cd: "doug lipski's favourite band puts his name on their cd!" or just "songs for doug". I think thats catchy. My wife and friends would be sooooo impressed. cant wait to see you on tour in philadelphia! (btw ive seen you play 4x now and i will keep going back) keep up the excellent music, thanks for the diary shirley, take care and dont mix your liquors!!!
doug
Dear doug Oh sure. We'll put your name on our next cd.No problemo!!! yeah right As for your panic about the number of tracks we're going to put on the next cd......don't worry dear! There will be at LEAST 12 tracks.......probably more. You've got to stop worrying so much!!!! We won't let you all down.I promise. Oh and in future I will try to abstain from the evils of alcohol following your advice! Ta ta Shirley x
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you ever give out basin (on tour) my friend said she had two backstage passes, and she would let me have one. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go, (I still hold a grudge against the person responsible for not letting me see my favorite band!) and I am hoping to find another opportunity to meet you people! Best of luck recording the new album! I'm sure it will be better than great! Will Anderson
Dear Will Anderson We give out backstage passes to contest winners and fans whenever possible, to do meet 'n greets, either before or after the show. We will be holding contests on Garbage.com to win tickets and passes when the next tour kicks into gear! Hope to see you at the show! Thanx... Butch

I love your music. I've seen you guys play live 5+ times. Most of the venues have been smaller places, like clubs, Avalon in Boston for example. I've also seen you in larger venues like the Manchester Evening News Arena. As your popularity grows the likelihood of you playing the smaller clubs diminishes, do anticipate still being able to play the smaller clubs on your next tour or has the time come to abandon those smaller venues for the larger. Do you have any control over the matter? As a fan, I like the smaller shows, its closer and feels like its a private performance. Thanks Krawdad
Yo Krawdad... We still love playing medium sized rooms (1000-5000) most of the time, but we played in so many different types of venues on the V2.0 tour that we're pretty comfortable in a small club or playing to 75,000! The good thing about playing the big festivals is that a lot of fans get to see Garbage, as well as a lot of other great bands for the price of one ticket! See you on tour next year! Thanx... Butch

Ello Garbage, One: I'm VERY excited about the new album and can't wait to hear it! Two: I have a question about it that you might not have even thought of yet. I'm recently picking up DJing and my focus is predominately darker DnB and tech step. Do have have any idea for the plans for the singles releases as far a vinyl goes? Do people approach you to make remixes or is it the other way around? I would love you guys to release more of your tracks on vinyl. =D Thanks! -Jessica
Jessica... Garbage has remixed quite a few songs for other artists, and we have also had songs from both GARBAGE and Version 2.0 remixed by both well known and underground DJ's. We have always felt that our music lends itself to remixing, because of the variety of influences in our songs. Some of the b-sides and remixes were released on vinyl in the UK, and you may be able to find them on EBAY. Good luck with your DJing! Cheers... Butch

I love you guys, your are the most awesome band in the world. I have a question for you, or a comment for you to consider, however you wish to perceive it. For your next album will you please put the complete lyrics in the booklet? I have all of your songs memorized, but it takes a lot longer with no lyrics. and also, Will you guys please come to Cleveland, OH on your next tour, and how to you go about getting a meet and greet backstage pass? JARRETT YOUNG Sandusky, Ohio
Dear JARRETT YOUNG Sandusky, Ohio I take your point.I'll see what I can do about that!!!! ha ha.... As for coming to Cleveland..........ABSOLUTELY.Cleveland has always been really good to us.Right from the start. Shirley x

hey ho hey ho to my (beautiful ones) Garbage, i can't wait for your new cd to come out. being a musician myself..i understand all the hard work and dedication it takes to put a good cd out. i think its wise to take your time and to not rush. you can't just sit down and write a perfect song..even i can't do that. well i don't want to talk your ear off but i just wanted to say hi and i love you all. i get depressed a lot and think that i am ugly...even though my friends say that i am pretty. its something that just won't ever leave me...i feel like its a disease that can't ever be cured. but shirley crackes me up and makes me feel better. it also makes me feel better when i make my friends crack up. my question is for shirley.....if you could change anything in your life and make it different...what part of your life would it be? thanks a mill. cheers from your number #1 fan, christine =-)
Dear #1 fan,Christine, Your E-mail was so sweet that I wanted to whisper across the noosphere: "There's no way you could possibly be ugly" Now to your question: At the risk of coming across as a unrepentant hussy I would have to declare that there is NOTHING in my life I would care to change.Everything that has occurred or NOT occurred has led me to this place in time and if I were to change even a tiny, insy winsy thing it would throw everything off balance and I wouldn't be me.And even though I hate myself every now and then.......I realise that in the great scheme of things I am drop dead lucky and I wouldn't change that for the world. Shirley x

Greetings and salutations! Wanted to thank you for all your hard work on the next album. Your loyal fans appreciate it and can't wait for the release!! Also, do you have any plans to release a compilation of videos off of Version 2.0, like you did with the debut album? I love that video! Take care!
Dear Dan Thanks for the enquiry regarding a possible Video Compilation release from Version 2:0. Unfortunately due to a variety of legal entanglements we are unable to release anything Garbage related at this time. However we have recieved so much interest from our fans regarding a video compilation that we will make sure to find a way to make them available to you in the not too distant future, at as low cost as possible. Shirley x

Hi Shirley which one of these in your books is the sexiest heavy metal deity alive? please tell me WHY? a) ozzy osbourne b) ronny james dio c) bruce dickinson d) kerry king btw, were you thoroughly impressed by dickinson's acrobatic moves in the "aces high" video? jesus, it brings tears to me eyes everytime i watch it.i've got a wicked suggestion...for thr next garbage video make a mockery of "aces high"! it would be so sweet to see you doing those splits in the air and going absolutely mental. anyways im looking forward to your reply (and a laugh...) regards, chee min
Dear chee min The sexiest Heavy Metal Deity alive is NONE of the above in my humble opinion. I would have to choose Lemmy from Motorhead. And WHY? Because he's the UGLIEST of them all.Bless him. Shirley x

hi shirley, i was just wondering if you've ever considered writing a book? i enjoy reading your studio diaries --it always lifts my spirits (which i am sometimes in very great need of), but i am also so impressed with how you express yourself. you may think you're just boring us with details from a rock star's life, but i think the way you write is so intuitive, that i'm sure a lot of people, especially young women, find many things you say helpful, articulating thoughts that they've had themselves. for me, since i don't have one, it's like you're the cool sister that we admire. does that make sense? anyway, just thought i should say something. i hope you find writing the studio diaries as interesting and entertaining as we do. spydergrrl ps...subject change: referring to your discussion about depression (i hope this makes you feel better during one of those moody broody moments in life): i have a theory that the natural state of human behaviour is to revert to insanity making the ability to remain sane a major accomplishment and one that we should all be quite proud of. it makes me want to wallow in my own smugness to think that i could make it through one more day without throwing things or screaming my head off like a lunatic when things piss me off! though i will admit, sometimes a good scream/roar/growl will do a girl some good.
Dear Saryang Your E-mail made me laugh out loud!!!! I LOVE your theory on insanity versus sanity!!!!! I wish I had written that myself.Your analogy is so much more appropriate than mine!!!!! Thankyou Shirley x

Dear Miss Shirley and the divine boys, I was reading the studio diaries lately and had the sudden urge to email you. Maybe because Soldier Through This" was playing at the time and the double Garbage got stuck in my brain. I just wanted to say that I absolutely cannot wait until the new album comes out, I've been wearing down my CD's of Garbage and Version 2.0 and well, I'm dying to hear the new stuff! I also wanted to thank you for the studio diaries and the response to fan mail because you all are so busy and don't need to this for your fans, but seem to enjoy it. I am a huge fan and wanted to thank you for that. I also wanted to tell Shirley that I was reading this weeks' studio diaries (up to Nov 2nd, I believe) and had read the one about feeling absolutely horrible and I wanted to tell her that I think that she is absolutely beautiful and if I had to look like someone else I would want to look like her. My boys friends agree with me since every time I say something about you guys, the boys drool over you!And not to worry about feeling blah, it happens to everyone. It is reassuring that a beautiful person such as yourself feels that way too though. My questions for you guys...which has taken a while to get to.....is..... for the new album are you guys planning a nice big tour, or will it be a small club dates, or will you tour at all? Because a ton of Canadians love you guys and I know that I'd drive hours to be privileged to see one of your concerts. Much love to everyone,
Dear *Niki*, Ottawa, Canada Thanks for the adorable E-mail.You made me smile!!!! As for your question: We will definitely be touring Canada next time around and hopefully we'll be touring for a while so all you fans out there will be able to make at least one Garbage Show.As for the size of the venues.....well who can say at this point.Suffice to say we'll be willing to play anywhere.........any time......on any size of stage!!!!! See you then I hope? Shirley x

Real quick question, What gets that awesome shimmery sound on the guitar, like on 13X Forever? Its too cool, Joshua Dylan Moon.
Dear Joshua Dylan Moon We think that it was Duke playing a Fender Strat through an Eventide DSP 4000 and an analog Memory Man echo pedal, probably through a Matchless amp. But there are so many guitar tracks, going through so many effects, that we can't say for sure. You'd be better off trying to come up with your own sounds! Good luck, Steve
