I can see in the video that there are some scenes involving foot sucking so, Is there a foot fetishist in the band or something?
- Mauricio DePenkoff
Dear Mauricio,
No....there are no foot fetishists in this band. But you know what they say.......takes one to suspect one!!!!!
Cheers,
Shirley
Mauricio-
I don't think any of us are foot fetishists although Duke does have an unusually large shoe collection, so you might be on to something there. That scene in the video was the idea of Andrea, the director.

I'm about to undergo chemotherapy for a cancer that I developed and I'm a bit worried by it all. I'll have Version 2.0 to keep me occupied while in hospital (BEST album I've ever heard) but if the band could pass on to me some "get well" wishes that would mean a lot to me, especially if it's a personal message from Shirley. That would be a real boost. Hope you can help. Thanks.
- David Cowler
Dear David,
Thanx for being a hard core Garbage Fan! I know you're in a tough situation, but you need to be positive and stay optimistic. We don't like to talk about the explicit meaning of the lyrics, but most of the songs on Version 2.0 are about overcoming adversity, so I hope when you listen to the songs they give you confidence. We start our US Tour Sept. 17th, and hope to meet you on the road.
As we say in the Garbage Zone....
Enhance the trance!
Butch
Dear David,
I was sorry to hear that you are about to undergo chemotherapy and understand that you must be extremely anxious. If it is any consolation at all, I have quite a few friends that have suffered through such an experience and recovered completely, going on to lead healthy and active lives.
I am sure you must be perfectly terrified at the moment and there is very little I can say to alleviate your fears. However if you like our music then I suspect you must be a little fighter.........and if you are a little fighter then I believe you will do just fine.
All the best my friend. Get well soon damnit. That's an order.
Shirley Manson
David --
Be strong and keep a positive mind. Hope you get better really soon and I'm glad you like the record!
Thanks,
Steve

Which one of you has the Corgis? We've got a sable/red pembroke named Khan. My son did that because we were watching a series on Ghengis Khan the week we picked him out.
- Nicholas & Sherry Horishny
Dear Nicholas and Sherry,
Steve is the member of the band who has two Corgis. They are called Simon and Gromit. They are named thus for inexplicable reasons!!!! To be more specific........Simon is actually a girl which makes her name even more peculiar. As if it wasn't peculiar in the first place!!! And Gromit got named after the cartoon dog in "The wrong Trousers".
Cheers,
Shirley
To Nicholas & Sherry,
Hi -- it's me who has the Corgis (Pembroke). They're named Simon and Gromit, and we got them because they're great- I didn't know about Ghengis Khan!
Thanks for writing,
Steve

Question for Shirley. Some of the songs on both Garbage and Version 2.0 are about taking control of your life and getting back at those who have hurt or misjudged us/you. Everytime I hear a song like Supervixen, Dumb or Vow, it sounds like you're singing directly to some person who has had a deep affect on your life. How do you think your musical career would have changed had you not experienced some of the things and people that crossed your path? I'm also wondering just what each band member's favorite song on both 'Garbage' and 'Version 2.0' is.
- Adam Tupper
Dear Adam,
Obviously if you extract any of the experiences that you live through in a lifetime then you would end up as a very different person indeed. I don't regret anything that has occurred to me throughout the course of my life even if there have been unpleasant circumstances or unhealthy relationships etc. All that matters to me now is that I have survived them all!!!!!! I love where my life is right NOW. Looks like I'm having the last laugh huh?!?!?!?!?
Cheers,
Shirley
PS: My favourite song on "Garbage" flits between "Vow" "Milk" and "Stupid Girl".

Do you ever read a book of Elric? ( by Michael Moorcock ) and if yes, don't you think it'll be interesting about making a song on it ?
- Francois Nevo
Dear Francois,
I have never even heard of the book you refer to. Now of course I am curious and may well look out for it next time I am shopping for a new book. Thanks for the recommendation.
Cheers,
Shirley
Hey- haven't heard of that book, but we'll keep an eye out for it.
Thanks for the tip,
Steve

During the second chorus of "The Trick is To Keep Breathing" it sounds like you introduce some violins (maybe) and they sound almost Kate Bush-ish. Are they a variation of one of her songs? Is it just a coincidence, or did you plan it that way ?
- Michelle M. McCliman, Esq.
Dear Michelle,
You are not the first person to remark on the Kate Bush element in "The trick is to keep breathing". However the evocation is purely coincidental.
Cheers,
Shirley
To Michelle,
It's scary when lawyers start asking about samples! No, the strings in "Breathing" are written by us and played by two guys from Madison, Wisconsin. To me they sound more similar to the score to "The Piano", although they weren't copied from it.
Thanks for asking,
Steve

The number 4 has been the frequent number of members of some famous group of heroes (eg. the Four Musketeers, the Fantastic Four). If each of you could be a superhero, what would your names be and what would your powers be? Just curious.
- John Antonio
Dear John Antonio,
If I were a superhero I would be called Red Gilda. I would be able to make it rain and would be able to tame terriers.
Cheers,
Shirley
John, I can't speak for the others but personally I would be Spiderman. This would allow me to travel above the audience at our shows in true Bon-Jovi fashion, swinging through the air from my own spider-web. Can you arrange this please? Thanks!

I graduated from Viroqua High School 3 or 4 years behind Butch. I was 1 year ahead of Chris and 1 year behind Lisa. We used to listen to Butch and his band practice in the basement of his dad's clinic. I seem to remember a guy with the last name Christenson that sang lead vocals (he was bad). Question is: What was the name of that band and who sang lead vocals? It has been bothering me for years.
- Bret Newman
Bret...
The band in question was Eclipse, comprised of Bob (Worm Man) Christianson on vocals, Ben Severson and Joe Secton on guitars, Craig Sines on bass, and myself on drums. Bob got his nickname from eating various weird objects for money! We were a bar band that played a lot of shows in the LaCrosse/Hillsboro/Viroqua area, and had a small but hardcore following. We played lots of covers by Grand Funk Railroad, The Stones, Cream, Foghat, Humble Pie, Creedence, and Deep Purple. We played Smoke On The Water at the start of the night, at the end of the night, and for our encore! We sucked!

This question is for Butch Vig: I heard that a guy named Pauli Ryan is the "friend" who triggered the band name Garbage in your head. I noticed that he played some percussion on the first album but didn't see his name listed anywhere in Version 2.0. Are you still friends with him? Thanks!
-Andy McNamara
Andy...
We are very good friends with Pauli...he still does a lot of sessions at Smart studios doing persuccion overdubs, but also has been gigging all over the midwest with several different bands. I saw him a few weeks ago when we got back from our Euroepean Festival Tour. Garbage played in our local (Madison) golf outing for charity, the Hack 'n Slash, and he was in fine form. His team, the HoBros, actually played nude for several holes!
Butch

This question is for each member: What is your favorite Garbage song (from all recorded including b-sides) and why? GARBAGE RULES!
- Bill Heffner
Bill,
My favorite Garbage song right now is "You Look So Fine", because Shirley sings it really well live and we get to make a lot of noise at the end for about six minutes, which makes for a fun ending to the evening for the band.
Steve

I was wondering how you all met each other or if you grew up together.
- Jen Williams
Hi Jen-
Butch and I met at college here in Madison, Wisconsin, and Butch had already met Duke, who moved here from Nebraska to pursue art and music. We just hung out a lot together, and we heard Shirley singing with her previous band and knew we wanted to work with her. We were really lucky that we found her.
Thanks,
Steve
