My name's David and I'm yet another Australian who's dying to see you guys live. (I missed you at the Livid Festival in 96) Question for Shirley: Is there something significant about the final song on each album? Because with 'Milk' and 'You look so fine' you really really seem to putting your heart into them. And I've noticed on just those two songs your voice cuts right through my head...which is bloody brilliant! Keep churning out those kick arse sounds!
P.S. What part of Scotland is Ms Manson from? My uncle Tom wants to know.
Dear David,
First off..........I come from Edinburgh, Scotland. The east coast capital. So now you can let Uncle Tom know!!!!! As for the significance of the last cut on each cd.............well we just thought it right to end with open ended songs. Ones that make the listener want to go right back to the beginning of the record again. Almost like a film soundtrack. Does that make any sense?!?! But I am glad that you like the sound of my voice on the aforementioned songs regardless of the reasoning behind them!!!!
Cheers
Shirley

Butch, Shirley, Steve and Duke,
do you have any part in making the designs up for the T-shirts?? I just got the Orange one and i love it! Orange kicks ass and so do you.
Aylin
Dear Aylin,
Yes we do have a hand in the designing of the shirts and I am delighted that you like them. However if you have any ideas of what you would like to see...........post us an E-mail about it!!!!
Cheers

to shirley, butch, duke, & steve:
If you could meet anyone in the world, alive, dead, or fictional, who would it be and why? thanks for your time. and i love both albums, you guys are always ahead of the game !!
Thanks,
Noreen
Dear Noreen,
If I could meet anyone in the world it would definitely be John Lennon. I would seduce him and enslave him and paint his toenails in the bath.
Cheers,
shirley
Noreen...
I think it would be Alfred Hitchcock, one of my favorite film directors, or John Lennon, because he has been a huge influence on me. Thanx for writing, hope to see you on tour...

Being both a fan of garbage and tricky, i was more than delighted to see that he had a part in the wicked mix of milk (probably one of my favorite songs from the debut). his voice sounded really cool layered under shirley's. now for my question... how did the deal with tricky come to pass? another thing that crossed my mind... at the end of hammering in my head, there is reference made to not forgetting to take one's ventolin (which i have heard tricky does indeed take). nifty rhyming device or is there a story there? thanks for taking the time to answer these absurd questions and blah blah blah.
-scott f.
Dear Scott F,
The ventolin line comes from the fact that I suffer from asthma so I always need one at hand. (Also...it was a nifty rhyming device!!!!) As for working with the very wonderful Tricky............well he came to one of our shows in NYC and we hung out together. The idea came about from that. We absolutely love his work and it was a great honour to collaborate with him.
Cheers

Hey,
Love version 2.0! Shirley, I just read your interview in "Q" and thought it was great! Do you have a touch of OCD (in reference to your thoughts on toilets)?
-Gordon
Dear Gordon,
What in heavens name is OCD?

Hey Guys!!
Do you have a CD which has #1 Crush on it, other than the Romeo & Juliet CD. If so, I'd like a copy. Please reply.
Thanks,
Adam.
Dear Adam,
There is a version of #1 Crush on the B-side of a UK single we released called Subhuman although it is quite different from the Romeo and Juliet version. In case you didn't know, Nellee Hooper remixed it for the movie soundtrack.
Cheers

Hi all,
I just wondered if you you thought you've made it huge, by topping the bill at 'Reading 98' , above New Order. I went on the basis that New Order were playing, but came away a huge Garbage fan aswell. You were excellent.
Arron
To Arron:
Being asked to play the "headline" slot at Reading was indeed a huge honor and since we've all been, at one time or another, huge New Order fans, it was a huge thrill to share the bill with them that night and, I guess, given the response from the crowd, we felt (at least for a night) huge.
Duke
Dear Arron,
You have just made my day! Thank you so much for the compliment. Reading was great fun although we were a tad intimidated by having to follow New Order as we are all huge fans of theirs!!!!! However the crowd was amazing and treated us really warmly and all in all I thought we played pretty damn well. Despite the fact that I was steaming drunk!!!! I had celebrated my birthday that week and someone gave me a present of a bottle of champagne just before I went on. Because I was so nervous I drank the entire thing!!!!! BIG MISTAKE.
Ha ha hee ho humm................

Hey girl and guys,
My name is Allen and I just recently caught your show at liquid 2000 in Lubbock, Tx. It was great, and tell the sound engineer that he did an excellent job. It was some of the clearest live sound I've heard. I thought Shirley had great stage talk, and I'm glad all the fans in Lubbock Surprised her. Girls Against Boys were very impressive as well. I was hoping to get an autograph after the show but I know the being on tour is a very busy form of life, maybe next time. I was wondering if Shirley Has taken vocal lessons or if she is a miracle of talent. Also, I wanted to ask Butch What he likes to do when he isn't playing or recording music. And to Steve, if he actually programs it, how does the K2000 work out live. Last but not least, What was Duke's first experience in music. One last thing on this journey of text I'm not shopping for anything but you girl and guys might want to ask the lead singer of GVSB about the CD my other band member gave him the night of the Lubbock show. We are called Affliction. Thankyou for your time, I know its valuable.
a big fan,
Allen P.
Dear Allen P,
Thanks for the letter from Lubbock!!!! We enjoyed the concert immensely and are delighted to hear that you did too. In answer to your question.....no I never have taken singing lessons although I did sing in a choir as a child!
All the best

Butch!
We first met at the MTV Awards, and at Hollywood's Palladium, ...I'm the guy that brought you the Packer souvenirs when we stopped in Vegas to see Garbage on our way back to L.A. (after that rainy, Monday Night loss to the Vikings). I didn't get the chance to speak with you after the show, so I wanted to at least try sending an e-mail. My cousin, David Holdener, President of Nicolet Water, has a suite at Lambeau Field. He has again told me that "if your friends from that band would like to see a game, have them call me." - he's funny. Sincerely, though, Dave's a helluva guy who had no idea who Garbage was until I mentioned, well, that 'they were the best damn band touring today.' He liked the fact that you were from Madison and he was surprised when I told him you knew the name Nicolet. So, as odd as it may seem that this Garbage fan in L.A. has a cousin in Wisconsin who has given you an open invitation to catch a Packer Home Game, that's exactly what has happened. Understandable if you're a little busy to take Dave up on the offer! Butch, I've had so much fun seeing Garbage and meeting you all, and I wish you the best. You know, in high school I was a big KISS fan. (By the way, my high school football coach and social studies teacher was Mike Holmgren - really! Oak Grove High, San Jose, CA, 1981.) In college I was a fan of Genesis and Peter Gabriel. Then in the late 80's my favorite was The Mission U.K. So, it's been quite a few years since a band has truly excited me. As a graphic designer for a record company here in L.A., I find it most interesting the way you "design" songs. Garbage is a group of equally talented musicians, and I can't say that of many other bands...
Have fun you guys!
Sincerely,
Ed Spyra
Ed...
Thanx for the offer to check out a game in Dave's box at Lambeau! I don't think I'm going to be anywhere near Green Bay until X-mas, but I'll keep it in mind. Holy Cow!!! Holmgren was your teacher!!! That's too much....I would guess he was as hardcore then as he is now!!! It was cool seeing you in Las Vegas...thanx for the Packers merch...we had a gas that night...I won $165 on roulette after the show.... See you on the road.... Go Packers!!!!
