It's one thing to be nominated, it's a totally different thing to win.. I nearly jumped through the ceiling when they won the MTV breakthrough award. Now I don't even care if they're nominated.

Duh!! It's strange how can an album be that much acclaimed by the critics, and still not being nominated in much "awards". In that list, I saw just one BG nomination!!

Well, actually they HAVE been nominated a lot, they just don't have a lot of luck with winning. I think that's what you meant. I mean being nominated for almost 40 awards (and many major ones) is quite an honor. Besides, you get some sort of "award" just for being nominated, I found out. Some sort of plaque or something. I think BG had next to no nominations because it slipped out of the public concious in the USA and UK by the end of 2001. However, I'm surprised it didn't get any Australian music awards nominations or from other places, since it was HUGE in Oz and many other countries.

and btw, I got this info from many sources, I've been collecting data from many places for weeks, including Garbag's 2.0 era website (courtesy of archive.org) and cafemomo.com. The VMAs, Grammys, EMAs, and Brits I knew already, and I remembered the Yahoo! thing from 1999, but the others I had to research. But I'm glad I did.

Garbage has yet to go mainstream like ND. They haven't sold their souls to the devil like so many bands have. The latest seems to be Liz Phair. Almost all of her old hardcore fans have refused to buy her latest, and those that have refuse to listen to it. I am glad Garbage has held to their guns and remained in the shadows of popularity. But I do think that more people need to hear them and see them for the musical geniuses that they really are. A double edge sward so to speak.

Garbage was extremely mainstream until their last album. They were definitely one of the biggest rock bands of the 1995-1999 period. People seem to forget this. I mean I even found a karaoke version of Special on a kid's CD at Kaybee Toys, lol. I'd say that's pretty mainstream.
That has nothing to do with awards. Britney Spears, even at the height of her popularity, never won anything, even though she was nominated a lot.
It's just a matter of luck.

If they were so mainstream, how come people ask me who it is playing on my CD player at work whenever I play them? They never ask when I have Tragic Kingdom in it.

I have never had that problem
Apparently the people you work with must have short term memories, or they didn't follow the 90s pop/rock scene very closely. I mean "Stupid Girl" was one of the top 10 most played songs of 1996, "#1 Crush" of 1997, and "Special" of 1999.
You can't tell me Garbage wasn't mainstream. Garbage's whole objective as a band is to make pop music, and that's what they did and it was popular. They never have been and never will be "underground". Everyone knows a Garbage song, even if they weren't sure who it was by. Their music was unavoidable on radio for several years.
and btw, Tragic Kingdom is a bad example, considering how freakishly successful it was, and the anomoly in ND's career. You may as well have used Nevermind as an example. Garbage have never had that ONE huge song, or album. What they have is a consistent string of hits, and 2 extremely successful albums. And with Version 2.0, they pretty much singlehandedly delayed modern rock's death until the end of 1999, and also incorporated it into Top 40 radio.

I mostly work with people in their 40's and 50's. TK was my first ND CD (aaaah acronym city). I got their first two and threw them down the street. Their last two I never even bought. Here in LA, Garbage hardly had any airtime on any radio station. If it wasn't hip to Rick Dees, it wasn't on any pop station. The rock stations are mostly classic rock with the excetion to KROQ. They stay way out on the fringes with a few exceptions. Maybe my view is distorted by my local views of the music moguls out here. I got into Garbage by watching MORE TV on cable back in the 96/97 time frame. If I wasn't into Garbage, do you think I would have created this board?
