Big Bright World will be the next UK single released on July 30th. The Metro newspaper today ran a wee spot on music Shirley likes at the mo.

No "Control"? Quite surprising...

Control is for the US. Shirley pretty much confirmed that on stage.

Control will hopefully sit better on Us radio - the UK didn't like the rockier BIM. I still want ASH as a single

The band are more on control this time so I would think they decided what the single should be so if that's what they decided then do be it. The UK charts are a mess at the mo, a poppy song would I hope do better

Thing is they already released ASH as a 1-track digital download before the album came out, i guess that was sort of its single release.

This era really is a bit of a mess release-wise. I don't like all these different singles for different territories.
Just release I Hate Love and Automatic Systematic Habit everywhere and be done with it. They're by far the most obvious stand out singles left on the album.
After that they can release Battle In Me in the US and BFP is the UK. The latter's way too good to be left unreleased in ol' Blighty.

I hate all this too, started with BLM and I hated it then.
ASH needs to be a worldwide single, full stop.
IHL needs to be a single too

I really miss the days where Garbage released the balls-out songs as singles. hey seem a bit afraid to now for some reason. Even Battle In Me seems a little neutered compared to some of their former hits, as well as the aforementioned NYKOP tracks.

To start the album off with BFP was a huge mistake, IMO. It's not a bad song, but it's weak compared to the rest of the album. They should've started off strong, and ditched the whole single-by-region philosophy that caused would-be US radio hits like Cherry Lips and Shut Your Mouth to be looked over; wasted potential. I would suggest something like this: 1. Automatic Systematic Habit 2. I Hate Love 3. Control (top of the 1st two no doubt high charters with this one, especially if it's to be featured as a single from the new Spider-Man movie) 4. Battle in Me (even though it failed in the UK, that wasn't due to the song itself) It's the same old story album after album...why don't they just let fans decide these things for them???

I agree with that. Why they didn't release the catchiest songs from the album first is beyond me. ASH, IHL and Control are clearly 1st single material. BFP should be 4th or 5th single.

I think their choice of singles has more to do with what they assume would have a better chance of getting played on mainstream rock radio as opposed to whats more digestible to the general public. Though I do agree that something like "Automatic Systematic Habit" is probably one of the more catchier songs on the album, I do not see it getting much radio play. The reason being that most rock stations would see it as too ambiguous, while most pop stations would most likely not go near it; the reason being, as I believe Shirley has stated, is that the mainstream public is not interested in hearing music from anyone over the age of 20. Plus, in recent interviews it seems as though the band have essentially claimed their music and personal character to be the basic antithesis of pop music.
When Garbage started in the 90s there was more of a middle ground between pop and rock where bands like them could flourish, but now it seems as though most, not all, but most popular groups or artists are either definably one or the other. What makes their situation particularly difficult is that they already have a long history behind them filled with worldwide popularity and commercial success; which prevents them from getting much radio play on more open minded indie rock stations where their music would probably fit in the best. Either way I just hope for the best and keep my expectations realistic as I'm sure the band does.

But they wont back in the day they released all the best tracks of the album. I agree with your single choices and their order. I would only add Sugar fifth. Not that it has any chance of commercial success but I believe that it would show variety of the album and eventually have a boosting effect for the album sales if properly released. As for Big Birght World.. well.. it's my least favourite song on the album. It does sound more radio-friendly compared to the other songs but I just find it weak. What I'm more worried however is that the gap between single releases is becoming too big. It's not like Battle In Me or even Blood For Poppies were hugely successful, so the second single (+ a video) should have been released already. If we compare with Version 2.0 which had e similar release date (11th May) as NYKOP, by this time in 1998 the second single (I Think I'm Paranoid) was already released and the video for it had already premiered. In addition we all know how successful the lead single for V2.0 was. So whatever the band picks for a second single I just hope they release it soon.

You can't really compare the previous album's video releases, number or releases, or anything like that to the new record, because the industry has changed soooo much. Those videos were released so quickly because there was high demand for music videos when MTV and VH1 actually played videos. Now, the medium is mostly youtube/vevo, ect. There is NOOOO need to release videos in the same context. On that same note, their success really can't be measured with album sales like they used to, I think their success will be more viral.

Also, they had millions being pumped into them by a major label in the V2.0. They're probably all scratting round with their hands down the back of their sofas trying to find the money for a new video.
I reckon we'll get one more single after BBW/Control if we're lucky, and that'll be it.

Of course times and music industry are much different. But I think times are much more dynamic now and Garbage are doing things with a bit of delay. With a new album coming out artists release several songs in the month of the album release at least to generate some buzz. Garbage definitely had some press attention at the time NYKOP was released. So seeing the general reaction to the lead single (especially in UK) I think they should have moved to another single quickly. Then they could've used the UK tour dates to promote and support it. All I'm saying is that their release schedule could be much more well-structured. With all those different songs released for different regions, with or without videos... the whole thing seems pretty chaotic. And this is only understandable when you consider they don't have a big major label team behind them.
