NYKOP, has lot some of its luster. While I was wholly excited and initially had glowing sentiment as it released, since it's fizzled on my list.
I have all 5 Garbage's albums on a thumb drive for listening in the car and I listen to several songs off of the album:
ASH, Control, IHL and Sugar.
Whereas, I initially had high raves for the album it's feels more anemic as a whole than any of the other 4 albums. The b-sides (bonus songs) are all weaker than any other era, therefore those cannot prop up weaker album tracks. The previous albums have more than a smattering of strong tracks, which make them stronger overall.
I'd rank BLM side by side or slightly below self titled (2/3) as my second favorite album (b-sides included). BG ranks 4, Version 2.0 on top.
Any other fans feeling the same? Am I off the mark here?

Now the backlash? The album is still solid and very listenable. While BG & BLM had a few weak moments, NYKOP has just one slightly weak song: the title track (too childish near the end). Also I like "Man on a Wire" and "Big Bright World" more than before. IHL, ASH, Felt, Sugar, Control are all amazing Garbage songs. In the last month I listened to Felt a lot. Their first 2 albums remain untouchable. These 2 albums are so good that they could make a gig setlist only with songs from them. Rank: Garbage = Version 2.0 > NYKOP > BLM > BG

Still sounds fresh and am excited to play it everyday. The best hour of the day perhaps!

It's only grown on me. I wasn't originally as in love with it as I am now

Love it. Love it. Still love it. Its a remarkable return to form. Only song that is still growing on me is the title track.
As for the bonus songs, I love The One, Show Me and Love Like Suicide. Think they are good songs in their own right

I still listen to it the same way I did the first time, in fact, at times I would like to stop listening to it because it's kind of sick. BUT (huge but) only the standard version, I kind of don't like the extra tracks from the deluxe one, maybe "What girls . . ." but only I hate the lyrics.

The first two albums were so good.....everything following has had so much to live up to.
I'm not in love with this album, I admit it. I think it's better than a lot of stuff out now though. I also think it's better than BLM.

I was never a huge fan of the debut, so for me Version 2.0 is the high water mark and the debut is the least amazing (and still very, very good). Only the title track doesn't rock my socks - "Battle in Me", "Control", "Man on a Wire", are all as amazing for me as any V2.0-era single, with the others not far behind. "The One" should have been on the album; thanks to iTunes it now sits between "MOAW" and "Beloved Freak." Like all the others, I'm certain I'll be listening to this album years from now. I have to mention that my 4 year old 'makes' me play this album for him every day so he can flail about wildly to "BIM" and "Control"... it's tough raising kids ;D

I thought that maybe I wouldn't like it so much after the initial excitement wore off, but I've found that I like it more and more. I like the album more than beautifulgarbage and Bleed Like Me. I am still, however, undecided on how it stacks up against Garbage and Version 2.0.
Also, contrary to what people have mentioned above, I love the title track. It reminds me a lot of The Beatles and Pink Floyd, who I adore.

The hype wears off of all albums, but I have to say I'm appreciating NYKOP more and more probably also I love that we have a new era of Garbage and the band are very positive about the music and in great shape and mindset as a group etc it's pretty exciting. I want to see a show this time around so I'm hoping I'll be able to afford it when they're in Aussie... or *pipe dream* Auckland!!

I think it's a wonderful album - their best since 2.0 - and it still sounds as fresh and exciting as it did on my first listen. I've even grown to appreciate a couple of the tracks that I wasn't too crazy about at first.

I must be the only one who finds it to be the least solid album of the discography.
When listening to the other albums comparatively, I feel NYKOP has the least strong track listing.
S/T had Vow, Stroke of Luck, Milk and many other solid songs....
V2 had an all around stellar and untouchable batch of songs...
BG, while different than the Garbage norm in sound, is catchy and dark, wrapped in a shinier package...
BLM measures up next to V2 as my fave:
Run Baby Run, WDYLM, BLM, Metal Heart, BWF, RBTE, SINTE, AOBTC and Happy Home are all fantastic. While the band was in turmoil, we as fans had no idea about unrest and unease between them or the discord with Geffen. We knew they disbanded and then finished the album, but the band never disparaged that era until this era...therefore I feel that in the present, fans feel salty now over BLM.
The songs are arguably more solid and connective last era vs, this era. I don't know, I'm just not feeling the album in its entirety or a majority of songs. MOAW doesn't stick until her breakdown, NYKOP falls flat as a track, beloved freak is their least solid album closer....the b-sides/bonus songs lack any strength in comparison to Never Be Free, Space Can Come Through Anyone, Nobody Can Win, Badass, HoneyBee, I Just Wanna Have Something To Do...
Anyhow, I like the album, just not as much as their prior 4.

I can see what he's saying. I think the other albums are more cohesive which makes them stronger and makes me want to listen to the entire albums. NYKOP has a lot of different sounds on it and imo isn't as cohesive as the first 4. That's not to say that the album isn't filled with great songs because it is.
My absolute favs after listening to it a while are: ASH, C, BFP, IHL, S, MOAW and BF.
I also really enjoy BBW but feel the live version is better. F and BIM have lost a lot of their luster. I enjoy the song NYKOP at times.
The One and WGAMO are fun songs but very b-sideish imo. The other two bonus tracks are pretty but I am not obsessively in love with them.

I pulled out BLM again and listened to the whole album and forgot what a fun ride it is. I'm disappointed that they've changed their tune about that album --- I actually posted about Butch's contradictions re: BLM in this thread: garbage.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&thread=19007&page=3

For what it's worth--you can find interviews of Butch talking about BG, BLM, and NYKOP at the time of their releases in which he talks about how they "used more first takes" and "stayed looser" and "tried less to over-analyze or perfect every little sound" than they had on their previous records.

For me it is getting better every day. Started out liking (a lot) the first four songs and I thought that would be it. Then three or four listens in, I "discovered" I Hate Love, and everything else just kind of filled in from there. If not the best album of the year, it's second best after the new one from Eve 6.
