as much as i'm looking forward to the new cd, i can't help but wonder about the radio market it will be released into. rock radio in the u.s. is in a bad way. most stations are owned by big conglomerates and programmed to keep listeners content and not change the channel. new music isn't a priority. the local station in my town that played WDYLM and BLM now plays mostly aggro-rock like avenged sevenfold and breaking benjamin. i don't know if garbage will fit in. but i work with one of the dj', so i'm gonna put the screws to him to get some airplay.

I am confident I will hear some new Garbage on my radio station (Milwaukee's 102.1 since I heard the end of a Butch interview last month) but it worries me as well. It's so sad to see all of these radio stations I once listened to go under (like Q101.1 in Chicago). Maybe they will help it make a comeback?

The UK isn't much better - the DJs here are obsessed with NEW MUSIC. And by that I mean NEW ARTISTS, not new music by returning artists.

Sirius and XM radio will likely play them.

Last time I checked, New York City doesn't even have an over the air a modern Rock station anymore. I think there is only one classic rock station left. Let that sink in.
These days Youtube, Pandora, I-Tunes, and bloggers(specially youtube and bloggers) are the most important way to get your music out there. Specially for Rock music since there aren't that many top 40 rock bands left.
I don't expect Garbage to sell huge numbers. They haven't been a Top 40 band in over a decade, and bands made up of 40+ band members just don't get the mainstream attention that they should. With that being said, I do expect the band to have a strong showing. I expect that bloggers will keep an eye out for Garbage since Butch has been producing some of the most high profile rock albums of the past few years: -Wasting Light by the Foo Fighters(2011): Sold 235,000 units and was nominated for the Grammy's album of the year. -21st Century Breakdown(2009): Sold 1,005,000 units and won the Grammy for Rock album of the year.
If the bloggers have a good critical response I can see Garbage selling 150,000+ units. That's more than almost every Rock band out there today.

Historically Garbage previous first week sales ranged from 73-88K, if they get a similar first week with this new one I will be really happy.

I would be happy with about that number as well. But I am always hopeful it will sell even more.

I just want Garbage do well this time around, they have been screwed over with their last 2 releases , hoping this era will right some of the wrongs of the past like an album pressing on 12" vinyl - why AG and BLM still seem ridiculous

I really hope they play it in LA somewhere. Most likely on KROQ or 98.7 if they do.

Sirius XM plays lots of alternative/rock songs on lots of channels that I listen to. Even the pop hits one, they always play Bush - Sounds Of Winter and that's NOTHING near pop.

^ I always thought Bush sounded kind of generic (not so much poppy..) but that kinda makes sense to me, and also given that Gavin's married to pop princess Gwen. Man I hate how the music industry works...

That is interesting here is quite different radios haven't companys on their back ,Big radios that cover all country have their favorit artist's but the new songs get more attention, of course there are also radio that air just,rock,jazz...etc but mainly they prefer commercial music so is quite hard hear bands/singer that haven't a "name" even if are famous like Lacuna Coil and the same goes on music channels.Garbage here have a good reputation even if prob will not sell as some national singer or commercial singer like Lady GaGa so i guess i will hear the singol a see the video easly. I haven't listened to the radio in AGES! But I know Rock 102.1 in Milwaukee will definitely play new Garbage. They're one of the few indie stations out there. I'd expect WJJO in Madison to also embrace the "home team". In Minneapolis, I can certainly see the indie stations playing the album. The Current (MN public radio) and KFAI (community radio) will definitely play it. I know DJs at both stations and not only are they fans, but they have full control over what they play.
I hope the band embraces podcasts this time around. That is how I hear almost all of my new music. Shows like Dark Horizons out of Tampa reach thousands of people worldwide. It may be a much smaller number than commercial radio, but podcast listeners tend to be more passionate about music than the average radio listener and there is *significantly* less expense to get airtime. Just send a digital promo to the DJ and there you are. No payola. No hoops to go through. As a podcaster, I can't help but dream about being on a DJ promo list...

I think one of the fundamental mistakes of their campaigns after Version 2.0 was to stop marketing the band across genres like they did on the first two albums.
There was tons of mixes available for dance stations, alt rock, triple A, top 40, hell Special even had an urban radio mix. Not sending Androgyny to urban radio with that Neptunes mix (at a time when The Neptunes were huge) was a mistake on Interscope's part. Likewise, as soon as WDYLM had peaked, before the band toured the US and before Bleed Like Me was ready to go, they shouldve sent Bad Boyfriend to modern rock.
The BLM campaign faltered, at least in the US, can be partially attributed to the unexpected death of their product manager just before the album was released - to me I think that killed the momentum of BLM, and by the time Geffen got their arse in gear the album was sinking.

You may right but the support should be come also by music channel's, if they diden't air the videos the album diden't get a high rankling on the chart's.I can speak just for my country but at the time WDYL is been aired a lot...unfortunately the other videos with the exception of BLM got more less space or maybe was just aired on late night/early morning and the album diden't got a long life on the top ten.... About the remix's...mm well i'm not a big fan, i dunno how much who buy a rock album could be like hear a dance version,Neptunes was good at the time but personaly i woudln't liked they put their hands over a G song and the same for some popular Dj now like David Guetta . 98.7 here in LA should play them. They've been talking about the new album for over a year now. Even though owned by Clear Channel, they still play Special, OHWIR, and once in a while something else. But at least they play something daily from them.

1/31/12 - WFNX (Boston) morning show just gushed about how excited they were for the new Garbage album. Spoke about how hot Shirley looks at 45, how significant Butch is, listed 6 or 7 prior singles and called them a "hit factory," how before-their-time they were. It was good.

I used to listen to Sirius/XM radio when I had it a few years ago.... I liked XMU & Underground Garage mostly. Sometimes I listened to 1st wave (80s alt) and Lithium (90s altrock) too. When I had DirecTV music channels, the ones I liked were College Rock, Reality Bites (90s alt), Flashback/New Wave, and SubTerranean (alt dance).
IDK if any of these would play Garbage. I think I only heard them on the Reality Bites station & Lithium.
I use LastFM radio & Pandora sometimes, but not that much. I don't find it introduces me much to new music.
I never listen regular radio anymore.

Justin Kade, of Kade Show on 98.7 FM KYSR is a hard core Garbage fan. He is freaking stoked about the new album. His exact words to me "It's about damn time" when I told him the release date. This is a FB post from Friday from him. "The new Garbage is going to be killer. It's another great year for new music! Different vibe from last year, but still stellar. #excited"
