Tough question. Two songs come to mind: -From a purely emotional point of view I would pick Silence is Golden. You can really feel the pain and the power in her voice at the end of the song. -From a beauty and range point of view I would pick Tell me where it hurts. Her voice is majestic in this one. Mixing the low key verses with the powerful chorus(specially at the end) really show off what she can do.

so many come to mind... and i'm partial to Garbage's early stuff with all its nasty attitude. but i recall thinking when the song came out that "Witness to Your Love" was technically such a good vocal performance.

Haha, Paul I have to go with the emotion in "Silence Is Golden" too. But I love love her voice in "Milk".

i've always loved "silence is golden". if any of the other people who mentioned it get the chance try to listen or watch a video of the playing it in 1999 at the end of the 2.0 tour. i think it's a much more powerful version than the one on BG.
and it's not always the whole song that grabs you. in "bad boyfriend" when shirley sings the "wrapped me up in your wire from the start" line, i still get goosebumps like i did in 2005.

Soldier Through This. hands down..you can feel the raw emotion pour from that song and #1 Crush also comes to mind. Listen to the live version of #1 Crush she sang on the Howard Stern Show.

I've never been to a Garbage concert, but i've seen a lot live performances. And when it comes to life performances it's Oster Festival -96 Trip My Wire. Just because of the raw power. When it comes to album versions it's Milk. In my opinion Shirley's best vocal performances were in the debut (Queer, Vow etc.) and Milk is the best of the bunch. Her voice really shines in that one. After debut-era i have to go with Can't cry these tears. Correct me if I wrong, but i recall Shirley saying her nose started to bleed when she sang that one

Nobody Loves You for me... I know it was never performed live and I don't think it ever will. The notes she hits there are quite impressive and can't image Shirley hitting them on daily basis during a tour. Nevertheless it's my favourite song ot BG, Shirley's best vocal performance IMO

I agree with Silence is Golden and Nobody Loves You but also Milk and Right Between the Eyes, expecially for the ending part....

So difficult to discuss because I think Shirley has so much versatility in her voice - she can do the harder stuff as powerful and nuanced as the softer stuff. Cerain notes or words she sings are memorable.
Off the top of my head (this could be for the whole song or a particular not/lyrical performance):
Medication (Acoustic), Milk, Only Happy when It Rains, Supervixen, Queer ("You can touch me...", Special, Witness, Tell Me where It Hurts, Push It, Vow, Can't Cry These Tears, Cherry Lips (Hot PANTS and high heels [BG review: Manson's sense of nuance is on full force here; the way she hits the p in "pants" is almost worth the price of the CD itself.]"
Continued...Silence Is Golden, Why Do you Love Me, Bad Boyfriend, Cup Of Coffee, Bleed Like Me (You Should See My Scars), Drive You Home, Use Me, Dumb, Fix Me Now, 13xForever, Subhuman, #1 Crush.

When it comes to certain phrases, I add Stupid Girl: ...A million lies to sell yourself...
The amount of contempt in Shirleys voice. I think Shirley has so much versatility in her voice Shirley is not the most talented singer for sure. But that versatility makes her one of my favourite singers. When you hear her sing, you really feel that she means what she's singing. Many singers these days just show off their vocal ranges and that's not singing, imo.

Shame on me for not mentioning this earlier, but damn the vocals of Kick My Ass are great:
I have noticed that I like Shirley's softer vocal more than her power vocals. She has a way of packing a lot of emotion into a song without doing too much. Kind of like the anti-Katy Perry that way.

I fell in love with garbage the very first time I heard androgyny because the very particular voice tone of shirley on that song, later I heard cherry lips and my romance with the band began so I have to say these songs are the most significant for me.
Also I think the best one is #1 crush, then nobody loves you and silence is golden.

Agreed with Kick My Ass. It was around the same time in '96 that #1 Crush, Milk, and Kick My Ass were being played in rotation here that got me hooked on them.

Cup of Coffee Love the harmonies, especially "Hanging round bars at night wishing I had never been born..." The live performances I've seen / heard are pretty damn incredible, especially when you consider that most of the vocal line hangs within a small range a few notes apart.
Queer Again, like Cup of Coffee, the range of notes in the vocal line is very small, but Shirley packs a lot of sultry attitude into her performance.
Witness to Your Love Hello harmonies! Love them. The "Free, we were free" lines are gorgeous. There's also some modulation going on in the song and the progression from key to key...mmm...
Non Garbage - The Hunger It gives me chills every time I hear it.
