I did, the other night. I've met people who thought they were "ok", but this was the first time I met a hater. Went out to dinner with some folks, one a guy from my girlfriend's work who I never met. We got on to music and he pretty much hated a lot of stuff, mostly anything that was halfway popular. He finally asked me what bands I liked as my favorite and one of the first I mentioned was Garbage. "Yeah, they picked the right name." he replied to that. "You gotta be kidding me, you don't like Garbage?" "Nothing like a couple guys with pro tools and some weird looking goth chick with a passable voice to appeal to the disenfranchised. I hate them even more now because they probably inspired Paramore."I was stunned. Didn't even know what to say. I told him he had shitty taste in music, and he smirked at me because I had nothing better.

I don't think I've met anyone who had a good reason to dislike them. But as a long time fan i've noticed that their music is misunderstood by a lot of people, people know their big hits, where as I always thought Garbage's genius was more evident on their albums as a whole. They're not a singles band. I dunno, they're just misinterpreted a lot I think.

I would have made a joke about it. I'd been like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa. You comparing Garbage and Paramore? Let's not say things we can't take back." If he saw you got mad about it he would have just acted more like an asshole.

You know the way Shirley says she feels when people go "It's raining... you must be happy... gettit?"...? That's how I feel when people say "GARBAGE IS GARBAGE" as if they were the first person to say that to me.

Now how does that legend go of how this band got its name ... what ... back in the early '90s, Butch was mixing some new sounds in the studio ... and someone in the studio said ... "Sounds like garbage."
I'm not kidding. I vaguely recall that that's the real story of how this band got its name.

I don't think I have ever met anyone who hatted them, I have only met people who have never heard of the band.

I haven't met anyone who's strongly hated them before either. Most people say they don't know them but once I mention a few songs they realise they know who they are and think they're ok or good.
My mum does the whole "Garbage is Garbage" a lot, it's just another bad mum joke that she likes to repeat a lot just to shit me.

Well I did meet a Curve fan that though that Garbage was just a rip off of Curve, but outside of that not really. Most people have either forgotten them, or like them.

My mum does the whole "Garbage is Garbage" a lot, it's just another bad mum joke that she likes to repeat a lot just to shit me. When they chose the name Garbage, of course they must have known that using the name Garbage would end up being used in 'pun' wordplay by critics and haters of Garbage. It takes a lot of nerve to call your band Garbage. Out of curiosity, I googled Crap to see if there exists a band named Crap ... CRAP! on MySpace Music www.myspace.com/crapthemusic

At scool back in 2000/1/2 when I was getting into the band it was a strange time in a sense.
There were those like me whom had always liked music from a young age and those in my year that didn't seem interested. Then almost overnight, people especially guys were suddenly really into music.
Having said that it was only certain types of music and specific bands. Guys were suddenly all into Nirvana, Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Korn, Incubus, System of a Down, early Linkin Park etc. Thus, bands who write their own material, play guitars and largely dominated by men. Anything that didn't fit that margin was considered "non-music" i.e shit.
I had guys tell me Garbage were crap presumably cos Shirley was a woman not a man and Garbage strandles that line between rock and pop. As they are not necessirily easy to categorise by such narrow minded people, guys at my school just dismissed them.
Sometimes I think it was just my peers I didn't get on with just irritating me though - one guy said how awful the 5 Night Stand show was when it was on MTV.
One of my friends some years later said they were awful but that was only cos he hated TWINE. That pissed me off alot as they didn't write it.

I hope nobody hits me when I say this, but I think a lot of the hate for the band from the average music fan comes from the BG era. That wasn't a good time for the band, the record itself wasn't all that great, and that was a turning point for the band in the wrong direction all across the board. It really took them off the radar. I dunno, just my assumption.
(For the record, I love BG.)

I dunno if I agree with that, that record was ignored by the general public so I doubt most people would use a BG era song to justify why they don't like Garbage. From my time on other music boards, such as Popjustice or SayHey, I gather that BG splits casual music fans down the middle just as much as it does on here. I'll tell you that Bleed Like Me certainly doesn't get a lot of love elsewhere. In my experience, a hate of Garbage comes from people who don't like ANY guitar or pop music that doesn't fit into their wee box of what "real music should be" or from people who only think of Stupid Girl. That's fine, if you don't like that one song then okay, but you can't really form such an extreme opinion on an artist on the basis of one song. Shirley once said, "You have to be pretty open minded to get into us anyway" so i doubt she's losing sleep over it. Even when the band were at their commercial peak they were dismissed for daring to be a pop band and for shirking all allegiance to the way things are "supposed to sound". For anyone out there who never gave Garbage a second thought because they weren't afraid to take risks and use 60s harmonies, 70s basslines, 80s riffs, 90s percussion and mix it all up randomly depending on the song, and not fit in their own musical snob rule book - YOUR LOSS MATE. A lot of people here may not remember, but when Version 2.0 came out a LOT of the reviews for the album and for the live tour were either extremely good or bad/struggling to say soemthing nice... it took til around 1999 for critics to soften up on Garbage. Even the debut album struggled to win critics over (THEY USED TRIP HOP BEATS WITH GRUNGE LITE RIFFS GADDDZZZ? ) Then the knives were sharpened again when BG came out - although I noticed that BG got the same mixed opinion, the same music critics hated it (mostly, except Q and Classic Rock magazines) but the reviews from lifestyle magazines, womens mags, and fashion press all raved about it. Surprisingly, the samething happened with Bleed Like Me and Absolute Garbage, almost every great review was from a non-music publication. This is how the UK experience was for me, I can't speak for anywhere else.

"YOUR LOSS MATE" ... god, I love U.K. culture!!! On "BBC America" here in the States, I've been watching a marathon airing this weekend of the BBC's "Top Gear" show ... three guys who make their living as auto critics ... for whom when dealing with any other subject matter outside of autos (and I love the U.K. term 'saloon' for 'sedan' here in the U.S.), they turn into 'The Three Stooges' of hilarious incompetence ... if you're looking for a great comedy show on British TV, take a look at "Top Gear". The BG era: It's most unfortunate (I love the phrase "outrageous fortune" by Shakespeare) that the launch of the BG era coincided with the event of 9-11 (BG was launched in October 2001). I know that the event of 9-11 had an adverse impact on the BG promotion campaign - my mind was focused on the event of 9-11 - I missed the launch of the BG era - it wasn't until 2004 that I bought the BG album and got myself up-to-date in what was happening in the world of Garbania.

Honestly, I didn't even know about BG until a couple years later. For some reason, as much as I love them, the band fell off my radar for awhile.

A lot of my friends only knew who Garbage were once BG was released. Before it they maybe knew WIGU and OHWIR, but after BG they were really into them, but then again it was a lot more popular here.

My cousin. He is 10 years younger than me. He doesn't like female fronted bands. He is more into metal and hard rock.
