Two of Garbage's most recent demonstrations of their epic, Pretenders-channeling persona. But which is the better tune?

oh!!! I don't know. This is too difficult. I love them both so much for different reasons. The harmony in Witness to Your Love is amazing, by the way.

TMWIH
So Pretenders-esque... I love it (but also love WTYL).

Tell me where it hurts is much better. Anything that Shirley puts her voice on is amazing to me.

Witness to Your Love is totally underrated. For sure the best song since BLM.

I like TMWIH a lot, but Witness To Your Love could be a hit if it were a single.

WTYL by far! TMWIH sounds to 'smooth' to me.

ooow this is hard. The song are both the same style, but at the same time very different. I think WTYL is more 'upbeaty' in a way, whilst TMWIH more a song is to play when you're lying on your bed thinking 'bout stuff, like life and thingsd that happened. Shirleys voice is in both amazing, obviously. but i think I like it more in TMWIH
Soo... I'll have to go with TMWIH

I took a look at my play count in iTunes, and WTYL won.

Tell Me Where It Hurts, hands down. Lyrically it is much stronger for me. It has a more developed, distinctive sound, whereas WTYL is a little bland and basic. I like Shirley's vocals on both though....better than most of her vocals on BLM (where her personality sounds drained out compared to past records).

I would have to say Tell Me Where It Hurts. I LOVED THAT SONG ON FIRST LISTEN!! I didn't know what to think of Witness To Your Love on first listen. I had to listen to it a couple of times.
I don't know what it is about TMWIH but there is something that I really love. I also love the video so much!! lol

Though I initially dismissed it as another one of Garbage's second-rate paeans to late 80s Cure, WTYL has grown on me exponentially. I now rate it not only (far) over TMWIH, I consider it one of their best songs this decade. When I do my Top 100 songs of the year, Garbage will be making a surprise landing somewhere in the middle of the chart. Who'd have thought?

^ I don't hear any of The Cure in that song....especially late 80s Cure. I think it's a tribute to the Pretenders more than anyone else (like TMWIH seemed to be vocally).

It hovers in the same MOR territory of RBR, that ground that resides somewhere between Pretenders and the Cure. But it does so more successfully than many of their other attempts.

Hmm...I never saw The Cure in RBR either. Even their most pop songs are more whimsical and weird than RBR or WTYL.

Actually, I pretty much agree. I guess RBR sort of resembles Just Like Heaven, and I remember that song was one of the few critics liked from BLM because of its alleged similarities to the Cure. But it never achieved the dreamy guitar pop heights it strived for. I do think G spent the latter half of their career channeling the Pretenders a few too many times. They should have quit with "Special", which, in my opinion, actually trounces anything released by the Pretenders themselves. (Blasphemy, I know, but I think even the most bitter critic would admit "Special" is a bonafide 90s classic).

I can't pick between TMWIH and WTYL. I abstain.

My only remaining gripe with WTYL is the unspeakable solecism that Shirley commits in the very first line of the song.
