I highly recommend this film. It's about a complex mother-daughter relationship. Michelle Pfeiffer murders a boyfriend who had rejected her. Her daughter is taken into care and suffers the worst kind of foster hell, before finally being blessed with a gentle and loving foster mother (Renee Zellweger). Jealous of their relationship, Pfeiffer manipulates Zellweger into believing her husband is having an affair, she confronts him about it and then commits suicide, leaving the daughter in the lurch again. It's incredibly moving and Pfeiffer is just a study in evil. She's great in this film. Should have been nominated for an Oscar, Zellweger is also excellent. Shame it'll be dismissed by many as a "women's picture". It's much more than that.

I love Michelle Pfeiffer, but I can't stand Renee Zellweger. Everytime I turn on the tv, there's that squinty-eyed, goofy-lipped weirdo looking at me again. Get off my screen you freak!!

Sarah, you definitely have a knack for giving away film endings without warning anybody there might be a spoiler ahead... you did it last time with Identity too... though it's not like I was gonna watch it anyway.

...in my enthusiasm to sell the films I like I do tend to get carried away. Whoops!

Slack, if you think the movie was great you should read the book. The book was much better than the movie!! It went a lot more into the various relationships that she had with the people she lived with. It's a fantastic book.

Yup. It's one of my favourite books. I'm awaiting Janet Fitch's follow up. I'd been waiting for the film for ages, it only just got a release in England.
