the writer who wrote that review is an ass, not just because he is not a big fan of garbage, but in the sub headline he wrote "best of nirvanna producers band." He came into the review biased about the band not giving them the credit as a whole they deserve.

That was seriously lame, I agree....I mean V2.0 was grammy nominated and this guy is still trying to define the band as the mastermind of Nirvana's Nevermind producer?

Q generally give good albums 3/5 stars.
Really good albums (ie first three of Garbage albums) get 4 stars. Exeptional albums get five stars. Only happened about 50 times in 20 years of Q being published.
Bleed Like Me got 2 stars.

I am an avid reader of Q magazine and I have always felt they do a good job in their reviews.
But, the 'Nirvana' thing really pissed me off.
The picture and the full page ad is cool. A Must Purchase this month.

You want something to piss you off.....? This was Q's review of Bleed Like Me:
They give BLM 2 stars.
"...sadly from the opener My Bad Boyfriend you can tell BLM is going to be as bland as paint. The whole album is awash with the sort of superlite-alt-rock they used to play over the smooch scenes in Dawson's Creek. It's rock, yes, but with no edge, no passion and none of the restrained power of previous hits Stupid Girl or Only Happy When It Rains. While songs such as Why Do You Love Me have the breathy, confessional quality that Manson has always used to such effect, there's no sense she's admitting to anything interesting. Only piano ballad IAOBTC, a world weary Wings pastiche where Manson sighs "Fade to black/I'm sick of trying/Said too much/Now I'm done," gives a hint of the old magic. Trouble is, you can imagine Liberty X covering it and doing it better. This was a golden opportunity for Garbage to re-establish themselves. Sadly, they've blown it."

Dam beat me too it! (I posted scans on another ahem well known G forum). Anyhoo - yeah its not a fantasically glowing review but 3 is positive - great that they are featured in the mag - full A4 add on page about 3 or 5 and included at no19 in their 50 best tracks of the month. Vote Stupid Girl online at www.q4music.com. As for their album reviews - Garbage got 4 stars, version 2.0 got 3 but was said to be stunning esp Push It and Special, Beautiful Garbage did get 4 stars saying it was "sharp, seductive music from a band at their peak" but by the time BLM came out they said BG was awful. And yes BLM got that less than enthusiastic review. More suprising was NME giving it a better review than Q and NME can be harsh at the best of times

Why did he have to go and take a stab at WIGU?
and the whole "Nirvana producer" thing is uncalled for.
meh... at least AG got some promotion.
what's with the release date on that ad? this magazine is recent, isn't it?

Yeah music reviewers always come off like asses. Music is so much more subjective, than say movies.....everytime i read music reviews I think 'this person should get a real job.'

wow, that Q review is wayyyyyy harsh. obviously, i disagree--I think BLM is right up there with the rest of the albums and I say that with no apprehension. It's an amazing work!
and i LOVE bad boyfriend! I love when shirley is sassy! haha

I still think the majority of BG is riduiculously underrated and desrved better - I was fed up when Q and Kerrang after giving glowing reviews shunted it 3 years later. I realise what critics say is irrelevant to my own tastes but I do take it a bit personally when my favourite bands get slammed in the media. Though Im still overall happy with the AG review (bar the WIGU comment - by contrast NME said it was one of their best and they have been mega harsh bout G in the past) and Stupid Girl in Q's top 50. Dont forget to vote!!!

Gee, that's funny, considering that both V2.0 & BG got 4 stars from the magazine when they were released. Oh well, different writer, different views, etc. But it does always strike the reader as odd when the magazine "contradicts" itself. I expect the GH package will generally get very positive reviews, since Garbage is largely considered a singles band.
P.S. "Middlebrow" is kind of insluting, considering it suggests "MOR", or worse, something in post-grunge avenue, a la Bush.

Does anyone have the 2.0 Q review out of interest or the debut for that matter - I had 2.0 but lost it be cool to read em again.... I have all 5 album reviews from Q in cuttings folders, gimme a day or two and I can scan them all for the board. Anyone remember when BG came with a black and red sticker with a Q review saying "Sharp, seductive music from a band at their peak?" BTW Uncut magazine gave Absolute Garbage a 3 star review (out of 5) and actually mentioned that they were weren't happy that the, and I quote, "Cute Androgyny was left off" Music Week reviews Tell me Where It Hurts.. quite good review but they didn't big it up. Only negative in it was referring to the "Underwelming" Bleed Like Me album. I didn't buy those magazines though so I have no scans!
