now that the tour has wrapped up i'm curious to know about what everybody thought about the shows they went to.
LOS ANGELES APRIL9/10, 2012
when i heard there was a new album coming i made a vow with mase(sinnerg)that we'd be at the first show. it was great to see all the west coast board members and meet new ones at the el rey. got to talk to butch, steve and duke before and after the shows because they went into the venue thru the front doors.
it was emotional when the lights went down and the intro started. as the hiatus went on i had to wonder if i'd ever be at a garbage show again. when they kicked into "supervixen" it felt like they'd never been away. hearing all the old songs again was a thrill. got to hear ASH and MOAW for the first time. BFP and BIM souded like they'd playing them for years. worth the trip.
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ MAY23/24, 2012
went down the night before the show(the 23rd)to gamble and have a good time. stayed in the same hotel as the HOB. was on my way back to my room after dinner at the hard rock cafe when i noticed a tall woman dressed all in black with her red hair pulled back in a ponytail. could it be? it was. hoping i wasn't ruining her day off i walked up to say hello. "shirley?", i said to get her attention. she turned, smiled and said "hey". then this look of recognition crossed her face and she said "hey, oh my god how are you? it's good to see you". i couldn't believe she remembered me from years gone by. we talked for about twenty minutes about garbage and non-garbage stuff. i had some magazines with me i'd brought to read on the trip - one of which was the NYLON magazine she was on the cover of. she hadn't seen it yet. it's a little surreal to stand with someone and look at pictures of them in a magazine and off commentary on them.
the show the next night was great. marred only by the drunk guy punching the drunk girl at the beginnig of "stupid girl". shirley recovered nicely and didn't let it dampen the show. they also played "control" for just the second time.
TORONTO MAY 28, 2012
another great show. i remember shirley started talking about NYKOP and asked the guysto tell the crowd what made them uncool during their formative years. duke- art classes/ steve - marching band/ eric - dungeons & dragons / butch - smoked a lot of pot.
MONTREAL AUGUST 4, 2012
the band played at the osheaga festival. i knew it would be a shorter set, but i'd never seen the band play outdoors, during the day or at a festival so i really wanted to go. plus, if you can't have a good time in montreal, you're not trying. it's basically a north american amsterdam.
RICHMOND, VA SEPTEMBER 15, 2012
mase and i pulled up to the national to find no one in front of the venue waiting in line. then we turned the corner and saw why - because the whole band was signing by the stage door. i hopped out of the car while mase went to park. they'd just flown in from mexico. i asked butch if he'd been careful in mexico. he said, "oh, yeah. i only drank beer and tequila." by the time mase got back the band had gone in for soundcheck. felt terrible, but the band signed for everyone again after the show. he finally got to meet shirley, so it was worth the trip just for that,
NEW YORK CITY MARCH 22, 2013
the first of three shows in three days. saw a lot of the same people at these shows. never been to a show at terminal 5 before. great to see marissa from SF play "because the night" with the band. duke did his farewell to the outro music "thanks a million" and when he finished shirley, steve, eric and butch all came back out and did a group bow which i'd NEVER seen them do before. might've been the highlight of the whole tour.
PHILADELPHIA MARCH 23, 2013
another venue i'd never been to before - the electric factory. those of us waiting in line got to talk to the band before they went into soundcheck. i promised myself i was done asking for autographs. enough is enough after a while. i'd rather let someone else have the experience. cool venue. stage was really high. like being in the front row at the movies. they opened with "bad boyfriend" - gotta love that.
SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND MARCH 24, 2013
the filmore. great venue. unlike some of the other places i've seen garbage play it didn't seem like i could also buy heroin anywhere nearby. the filmore stepped up and corrected their early pass snafu for those of us who'd been waiting all day. mase had gotten copies of the philly poster for a few of us as they has sold out so quickly. since this was the last show he and i were going to together we decided to wait to see if the band would stop on their way out. it was freezing. then it started to drizzle. i would have fully understood if the band came out gone right to the bus, but when they came out they walked right to the 12 - 15 of us who were waiting. when shirley signed my poster i apologized for going back on my promise not to ask for autographs anymore, but i said a signed philly poster would make a great memento for my 25th show. "oh, sweetie, thank you so much.", shirley said. guess she wasn't angry.
MONTREAL MARCH 27, 2013
metropolis. another heroin adjacent venue, but a good place to see a show. great show. shirley gave up trying to speak french after a few sentences. drove back to the US afterwards. too tired to hang out.
CLEVELAND, OH MARCH 31, 2013
my birthday. the whole five shows in nine dayd jaunt had been a present too myself. couldn't not go to the show on my birthday. spent a few hours at the rock and roll hall of fame before that. they've got shirley's "stupid girl" video dress and boots. while i was waiting for the show to start i was talking to one of the photographers in the pit. turns out he's a friend of the band's from madison days. i mentioned it was my birthday. he said he'd tell the band. later during the show while shirley was talkingto the crowd steve looked at me and said "is it your birthday?" i nodded and he wished me a happy birthday. when the show ended steve and butch were shaking hands at the front of the stage because the crowd was so close. steve grabbed a bunch of guitar picks from his keyboard stand and pressed them into my hand and said "happy birthday" again. pretty much the perfect end of my time on the NYKOP tour.
well the past year has amazing. i've had experiences and made memeories that will last forever and comfort me when the credit card bills start rolling in.
