Well this was my second Garbage concert of the year. I first flew out to Los Angeles to see Garbage at the first El Rey show, though now Garbage descended on the east coast of the US (i live in DC) so I was eager to see how much better the band had gelled since starting to play six weeks ago.
I took a 7:30am bus from DC to NY and got into NY around noon. After quickly grabbing a bite to eat, I stopped over at the best buy in union square to buy NYKOP since it was the official day of the physical release in the US. The deluxe was sold out though they still had the regular so I picked that one up hoping I could run into the band to sign it.
I got into line around 1:00 and there were about 10-12 people or so. I saw Mike H so it felt like a good ole reunion from LA. Butch, Duke, Steve, Eric, and their families rolled up in a 16 seat passenger van around 3:30 and we were watching them look at us cautiously before getting out and running through the side door. It was very surreal though they all went straight inside except Eric who stuck around and talked to some of the fans. I think there were about 25-30 fans outside at this time so I understood they didn't want to get mobbed.
About 30 minutes later, the passenger van is back with Shirley in the back which looked very cute. She was already in hair/makeup when she arrived and quickly ran into the side door though I think said a quick hi to fans. That was the first time I saw shirley in public which was very surreal.
After waiting around for another hour or so, many more fans were starting to line up and the webster hall security had us move the line to the other side of the venue. Around 5:00, security takes the entire line inside the bar attached to webster hall saying there were too many fans waiting on the street and they needed to get us out of there. (i am guessing around 150 fans or so at this point). They line us up in 3 long lines in the bar though this soon turned into a disaster. There was only one security card in the whole room so once we get closer to doors open, the three lines somehow form a huge ball of people and those that were waiting for 6 hours plus in line see that others are cutting ahead of them. It was very poorly planned by security and quite upsetting for those who have been waiting all day.
So doors open and security tries to maintain order, though some people were just nasty and were cutting anyways. I lucked out for the most part and even though I did not get front row, I got second row which was fine by me.
The opening act was a magician which I find quite funny, it is a good idea for an opening act though I still like the idea of having an opening band. The magician was ok, though for all his tricks I could see the fishing wire that he was using to make objects float so it defeated the purpose a little for me, though overall i think the crowd found amusing.
Garbage hit the stage at 9:00pm sharp as MTV Hive was filming this gig. There were many camera operators/photographers in the press section between the barrier and the stage that it was so crowded in there, i thought they might get into a fight jockeying for position! There were a few obnoxious fans behind us pushing through to get to the front, I really hate people like that as it shows no respect for those that waited in line all day.
Garbage was on fire for this gig, they were giving us so much energy and you could see the fight/determination of all the band members on stage giving it their all. Shirley was having a lot of monitor problems on stage and flubbed at least 3-4 songs. I could tell she was getting mad though eventually laughed it off. The crowd was having a great time so I don't think it mattered too much. Many of you have seen the MTV stream so i won't go too much into each song, though I loved they played Big Bright World for the first time which I was surprised that they would play for the first time with the stream going on. Overall the show was amazing, the crowd was giving a lot of love back to Garbage and it was an amazing experience.
After the show, I'd say about 30 of us or so lineup outside and wait for the band to sign and take pictures. After waiting for about an hour and 20 minutes, the band comes out though heads straight for the bus. I think they said something like they were tired and/or they had to get going which was pretty disappointing. I wish they had just spent 5 or 10 minutes with fans, but I understand they are not always in the mood. I had met Steve and Duke at the LA gig but had never met Shirley or Butch which is something I wanted to do at some point in my life.
I grabbed some dinner nearby with my friend and didn't get back to my hotel till 2:00am. I had to be up at 6:00am to catch another 7:30am bus back to DC so I could go back in line at the 9:30 club. The life of a groupie!
I will right that experience up shortly!
