For the benefit of Pop Crash and others on Facebook I want to devote a thread to a band whom I have had a love affair with now for a good number of years. One of the greatest live outfits I have ever had the pleasure of seeing, British band, Skunk Anansie fronted by Skin (aka Deborah Dyer).
Big 90s band started around the time as Garbage. They have now released 4 albums and are set to release album #5 later on this year.
They headlined Glastonbury in 1999 before disbanding and then reforming in 2009.
Their first two albums, Paranoid and Sunburnt and Stoosh, were released under One Little Indian Records (They Might Be Giants/Bjork) in 1995 and 1996 respectively. After switching to the Virgin label in 1998, their third and final album, Post Orgasmic Chill, was released in 1999.
Skin has described Skunk Anansie as a "clit-rock" group, which Allmusic clarifies as "an amalgam of heavy metal and black feminist rage". Members Skin and Ace have mentioned the Sex Pistols, Blondie, dub, reggae, electronica, hip-hop and world music as significant influences.
To me they write some amazingly melodic stuff with loud crunching guitars or slightly metal thrashy stuff. Skin's voice that has always appealed to me. Much like Shirley, she can do powerful and loud and soft and sensual in equal measure.
A "greatest hits" album, Smashes and Trashes, was released 2 November 2009. Their fourth studio album Wonderlustre was released internationally on 13 September 2010, preceded by the first single "My Ugly Boy". Album#5 is on the way this year.
Anyway, thats a bit of background. A number of Garbage fans I know are more than familiar with them but here are some of my recommendations for those that do not:
Paranoid and Sunburnt
Selling Jesus
Weak
Charity
I takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliche
I Can Dream
100 Ways to be a Good Girl
Little Baby Swastikka
Their erlier stuff lyrically dealt with poltics and religion but there are some amazingly powrful sogs about relationships (Weak)
Stoosh
Yes its Fucking Political
Hedonism (Just because you feel good) - their most well known song
Twisted (Everyday Hurts)
Brazan (weep)
Infidelity (Only You)
Post Orgasmic Chill (I still giggle over that name lol)
Charlie Big Potato
On My Hotel TV ( One to turn up LOUD)
Lately
Secretly (Used in the end credits to Cruel Intentions)
You'll Follow Me Down - one of THE best songs about a break up ever.
Tracy's Flaw - another amazing break up song.
The Skank Heads (crunch it loud)
Cheap Honesty
I'm Not Afraid
Smashes & Trashes
Tear The Place Up
Because of You
Wonderlustre - their BG album of sorts more melodic
God Loves Only You
My Ugly Boy
The Sweetest Thing
My Love Will Fall
It Doesn't Matter
Bonus - I've Had Enough
