I know it was obvious from the start, but him actually COMING OUT helps visibility and he is taking a giant risk, career wise (even though his career wasn't doing so well to begin with). A lot of celebs stay closeted to preserve their careers. Look at Ellen D. When she came out and tried to queer up her show, it got cancelled. Though she's gay in her personal life, on her talk show, she's totally hetero! But anyway...I wish Lance all the best... If you read one of the articles, he is supposed to be in a television show with one of the other NSYNC guys. They are basing the show off the Odd Couple except his character is gay. Isn't it a coincidence that he decides to come out just when pilot season is around the corner? Like I said, PR move. They didn't want to shock people when the show aired, so they decided to break the news a couple months in advance. My friend, this is purely business....

Not tolerated? In Hollywood its celebrated! How many movies / tv shows are there where there's the gay best friend who provides the comic relief, blah blah blah. Granted, the gay characters are not usually the leads, but then there are shows like Will & Grace where they are (and that show has been pretty successful). Sure, most people might not want their own kid to be gay still, but they dont seem to mind being entertained by someone who is gay or playing a gay character... This was totally a career move for him...and besides half his fan base is probably gay men anyway. The other half once being teenage girls who have grown up and dont care that much anymore.

Not tolerated? In Hollywood its celebrated! How many movies / tv shows are there where there's the gay best friend who provides the comic relief, blah blah blah. Yeah, comic relief. And usually stereotyped, effeminate/fussy/prim/bitchy/etc.. okay, better than nothing I'd say, and thankfully the scope of gay characters on media is growing and even a few series and movies have actual three dimensional gay characters in leads that aren't just relying on having a one-sided stereotype as the comic relief. And still, mainly gay men. Lesbian characters are pretty rare still, and transgendered even more so. Anyway, hopefully the growing variety of gay characters in media will also make more people realise being gay isn't just being good at decorating/shopping. A friend of a friend, when she heard I was gay said to my friend, "oh you're so lucky! it's so cool to have someone to shop with and just hang out and talk about guys!" Okay, that was not a negative reaction (compared to having my teet punched in), and I do like shopping at times.. but it's still kind of annoying that sometimes when people hear you're gay you're automatically assumed to be certain kind and enjoy certain things. Plus then there's the worse bit with negative reactions, had some, and probably will in the future. And I don't neccessarily mean actual violence, could just be getting inferior service at a restaurant (checked), being avoided (check), or just having to listen to demeaning jokes about gay people (check). And for example when starting in a new job, you can never tell how people are going to react and it can be a bit stressing. Of course, you could stay in the closet and just lie you have a girlfriend and three kids etc, but eventually that'll do your head in. And totally avoiding the subject isn't really possible because people always talk about their husbands/wives/kids/holidays and whatever their social lives include and if you always just shut up it looks weird and beating around the bush gets a little annoying. okay.. ending the rant. Just thought I'd give a few examples how it can still be said that being gay isn't, even today, tolerated. In some societies it's better than the others and personally I think I live in a very good place concerning that even if there are things to improve. At least I don't have to worry about getting hung for being gay. --edit-- p.s. not saying it wasn't a publicity stunt for Lance Bass. Just commenting on general as I don't find him that close to my heart

Thank you SO MUCH!!! I wanted to write an articulate post on this, but there's too much to say and I just didn't have the energy! haha --*SNIP*-- Even though I disagree with "tolerance" because it suggests that there's something with being gay. but it's better than nothing... You're welcome And I agree with what you say about the word "tolerance" ..the subtlety escaped me after the rant if someone said to me in Finnish that they "sietää" (tolerate) lgbt people I'd be pretty cross :\ hmm.. which got me thinking that is it that the Finnish equivalent has even a higher negative value as the English term or is it just cause I'm not a native speaker of English. The Finnish term is also used in the equivalent to sentence "I can not stand this!" um.. and how off-topic can you get?, Pt.5 p.s. I knew of afterellen.com (learned of it from an L-Word forum) but not afterelton.com ..weird!

I didnt say there's an accurate or fair representation of gay people on TV or in movies and I wasnt talking about the average gay person's life (that's why I said most people still wouldnt want their kid to be gay, however entertained they are by gay stereotypes).. I was saying that for an entertainer, they can easily use being gay to their advantage in Hollywood if they so desire. That seems to be the case with this N'Sync guy.
BTW: People stereotype everyone too. If you're a woman or a minority or even a white male people will stereotype your interests and just general way of being. TV / movies dont accurately represent most groups of people.

And yeah, stereotyping goes all ways pretty much.. and I admit they do influence my thinking at times as well, even if I try not to let them. But as my psychology teacher used to say, they're one way to help sorting a life out a little when all the general messyness of life is concerned. Although I'm pretty sure she said it a lot better and there was more meaning there, but still..
