Road Report Three For 98
Yo...
we have been working like banshees!
Here’s a quick update:
Currently sitting in the dressing room in La Jolla, CA. for a show tonight listening to Drive By Wendy’s new demo, which was recorded by Mighty Mike Zirkel at the fabulous Smart Studios....pure punk rock...but considering they just picked up their instruments 6 months ago, it sounds quite accomplished. We played in Bakersfield, CA. last night at the Kern County Fair...there was a Black Widow spider in the dressing room.....the kids still rocked out with a frenzy (they must be used to it). Had 2 great sold out shows in LA at the Palladium...lots of “stars” were there...Courtney and Michael Stipe made the biggest hoo hah, but I was most impressed by meeting Bob Sagat from America’s Funniest Videos! Shirley didn’t know who he was, but he is a massive Garbage fan, and it was a thrill to meet a real TV star. Who says there isn’t glamour in rock and roll these days... We played an acoustic set at a pub in Santa Monica for KROQ on Monday 9/28...it sounded good despite no rehearsal and a 5:30 AM wakeup call...Let me tell you, it is more nerve wracking playing in front of 20 people than 20,000!!! Shirley appeared on Politically Incorrect Tuesday night...she definitely held her own. We also did an AOL chat that got thousands of hits while we were answering questions...... The shows have been going down great, lots of hyper fans at times verge on Beatlemania (more like Shirleymania). We are on the road until Dec. 20th and then head back to Europe Jan 15th... Special comes out Oct. 12th and we have been getting great early feedback from radio, so we keep our fingers crossed....the video, directed by Dawn Shadforth, features Shirley as a Cyber Princess locked in mortal air combat with 3 evil rogue pilots...guess who wins!!! All for now...enhance the trance!

Hello Las Vegas! We finally saw the final version of the Special video last night and we're really happy with it. We also got nominated for three more MTV European Music awards, which of course we won't win- we never do! Maybe one day we'll get a special "most awards not won" award. But we don't care! We're in Vegas! Where we can lose on our own terms, not according to someone else's schedule! In fact, Shirley is probably down in the lobby losing money right now. She's really excited about her first opportunity to gamble (dubious sounding recording projects excepted), as apparently they don't have 24 hour casinos in Edinburgh. Or Sigfried and Roy, who we hope will stop by our show tonight, or at least Engelbert Humperdinck.
Had a great time in La Jolla (San Diego), playing in the campus gym there - the weather and the scenery are so beautiful there I can't see how anyone learns anything. We even had a contingent of Mexican fans drive up for the show bearing gifts of tequila, which seemed like a great idea until the next day. The Santa Barbara show was in this great outdoor ampitheater with a view of the ocean, and Tempe was also outdoors on a full-moon perfect weather night- it's going to be quite a shock when the snow starts flying later this year and we're slogging our way around the frozen midwest. Can't wait!
There's lots of new dates that should be posted on the site by now, and we're playing five nights a week from now until the end of the year here in the states, so there should be ample opportunity for you to check us out. Then we're heading back to visit the rest of the world after the first of the year, and on and on. Thanks to everyone who has seen us already- it means a lot to us to have so many of you guys showing up every night. We'll let you know how Shirl does at the roulette wheel. Now I'm going to drive around Vegas all afternoon in a big car with a radio contest winner who is going to show us the sights, accompanied by several UK journalists and photographers who have decided to follow us for a few days. Just another normal day in the Garbage life!
