Okay! I just got back from the Convention Centre and have too much sugar in my bloodstream to sleep, so I will attempt to write about it now!
I wrote the setlist on my arm, so obviously I have not much idea of the order, if I fuck it up, someone who was there will correct me, I'm sure...
Okay: Shirley was wearing a black tiny hankerchief that was supposed to double for a dress, with her red bandana on. Duke started in a pin stripe suit and tie n stuff but after a few songs he lost the jacket n tie. Butch, Steve and Eric all had on black shirts n long pants...only Steve had a red long sleeve job under his. Now that I have given you all fashion tips, I shall move on!!!!
Hurt...hooray for Smokin' Johhny Cash!
Queer: Fuck, this was the biggest JUICIEST version of Queer I have ever heard. It was an awesome starting song and the pace never died the whole way through the gig. This song had the BEST GATED REVERB on snare I have ever heard!!! I would give it an Olympic gold!!!
Bad Boyfriend: You are all mostly aware that this is THE garbage song I dislike. Didn't change after hearing it. The crowd went MENTAL, EVERYONE on the lower floor was standing during the first ten seconds of this song... The highlight for me was trying to see how Butch played the tom breakdown on two toms instead of about 4 that Grohl usually uses when he plays... His little arms were flailing about all over the place. Ah, delicious!
Boys Wanna Fight: Fucking hot! The sub woofers in that place made my guts hurt during the drums into the first verse... Dukes guitar was super loud and droned out Steve's (as for most of the gig) but when they did their dual solo thingies it rocked up big time!
Why Do You Love Me: I think this was the next song. Shirley said a few "hellos" and "fucks" and stuff like that between the other songs, but before this one she got all chatty and told the crowd that it's been too long since they had played Brisbane. Someone yelled out that they loved her and she was all "Oh, we love you, too! See, after ten years we sorta know where we stand...but yeah" And then they ripped the sound system apart with a blistering performance of Why Do You Love Me. Most of the crowd knew that one and did the old karaoke at the concert thingy ;D
Sex is Not the Enemy: Okay, here's where I sorta get all messed up because to write on my arm in the dark was hard and I started scribbling in random places... Shirley said something like "we're gonna get sexy now" and then they launched into this! 'Twas good, like!
Okay it was around here that Shirley forced Duke into singing a song. I don't know what it was but I managed to capture some on the digital camera my bro lent me (Thanks Andy!) so I will post it (along with pics) later... Shirley tried to play guitar but kept yelling at the boys cuz they wouldn't tell her the chords! After they stopped she got on the Mic and goes "Fuck, I can't remember how to play D chord!" And then Duke (I think) played it AND IT WAS NOT EVEN IN TUNE.... AHAHAHAHAHHAAAAA and Shirley just goes "okay then!" And then sorta stopped and played the next song!
I have no idea of the order from here, so I am just going to tell you what they sounded like. Someone can put them in order later if they are so anal!
Cherry Lips: They just launched into this one without really saying much, but after the first wah-tuba sample thing everyone got excited and started to dance. I fucking love when they do the REALLY HEAVY guitars in the chorus and I think they outdid Spinal Tap and got amps that had crunch to 12!!! It was so crunchy you could bite chunks off and spit them at people in front of you! Loved it...
Vow: Not the best version I have heard of Vow, but it was still solid as a bunker in a battle field... ie very! Shirley introduced it as Eric's fave song. I liked the version of Vow they did in Sydney 2002 during the BDO tour... but there was nothing wrong with this one! I'm just picky!!!
Push It: I love this song! I think it was this one that Shirley went into the audience in. She went up the side of the bowl/tiered seating and had a dance with some poeple! This performance was pure sex for this song...
I Think I'm Paranoid: AHAHA Duke fucked up the first two notes of the intro...but then it went on to be more than perfect after that. I especially love the ending of this song, and tonight they made me like it even more...
When I Grow Up: I can't recall if this was next (the last two were in order) but I'm pretty sure that they played three Version 2.0 songs in a row. The whole place went ape shit, singing and dancing and generally pissing off security!
Bleed Like Me: I think this was next. It was probably my least fave performance of the night. It lacked effervessence I thought, but that's just my opinion.
Only Happy When It Rains: This was another one where security was getting pissed off and making people stop having fun! Fun? How fucking DARE you pay $90 to enjoy something? I can't remember if this was the song where Shirley went up the other side of the tiered seating or if it was Stupid Girl...seems like a blur even though it only ended an hour n a half ago. They had a really long intro with the weird beat-box drums on the record and a guitar riff...it was sorta sexy!
Metal Heart: Shirley sorta stopped for ages and talked before they played this song. She was saying that it is their political song and talked about the war in Iraq and the people who have died for no reason, except for that our collective Governments want to interfere and illegally occupy their nation... I thought that it sounded really great live, but I half wished it had been injected with a bit more venom instead of being mostly like the record version. The crowd didn't really get into it, either because they didn't like it, or because Shirley's mini rant scared them! Whatever...I liked it!
Stupid Girl: As I said, I can't remember if it was this or OHWIR that Shirley walked into the crowd again. Either way, the crowd went nuts for both songs. Me n my brother were singing Train In Vain along to Stupid Girl...love that drum beat!
Right Between the Eyes: Meh, I dunno what I thought of this. I was just trying to get some photos during this song. I think I liked it, but my brain was fit to explode with excitement after hearing all those other great songs that I love! I remember it being rather acerbic...
This was where they all walked off and the sound dudes cleaned up the stage a bit and swapped Shirley's mic and did something to Steves Nord keyboard looking thing (I dunno if it IS Nord, it just looks like one, dammit!). Then after a minute or so they all came back on and things started getting request-y!
Shirley started just talking shite and said that we must collectively choose a song to play! So she sid "fast or Slow?" and everyone picked fast. Then she went through the albums and the one with the most yelling and screaming was the winner. Then she was all "Oh, the first or the second album?" so everyone is the house pretty much gave the victory sign to indicate that we wanted Version 2.0. Then she said which song? And Butch said Special...so then she asked us if we wanted Special and then they played it. But they had to find the guitars n beats n stuff so Shirley just looked around and swore her head off!
Special could have been swapped for another song. I've never liked it live...
After that Shirley did the same: "the crowd has spoken!" We got to pick either Supervixen, Not My Idea or #1 Crush...we got Supervixen and it was fucking HUGE! I wish they did #1 Crush instead of Special though Supervixen sounded like a stampede of fat children to a party table full of sweets! IT WAS FUCKING SCARY!!! I loved it!!!
Then after that Shirley asked us AGAIN what we wanted to hear and people started just screaming their heads off so she just sorta went: "You're gonna hear Shut Your Mouth- THE QUEEN HAS SPOKEN AND SHE'S GONNA SING WHATEVER THE FUCK SHE WANTS!!!"
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA She's so ace, that woman!
Shut Your Mouth was fucking awesome and I think it ended on that. If it didn't then I didn't write down another song, so I guess it must have!
Anyways, there are lots of things I missed, but I will save those stories for someone else to tell Mainly cuz it's 2am now and I can't be fucking bothered!
Oh, and I got to hang out with sacredapple, who FUCKIN ROCKS! Sorry I swore so much in front of your mum... I hope she had a wicked ace time!
