I never got into Madonna all that much musically, but I do feel she's done a lot for the music community. I'm with Matt about the fact that without Madonna, a lot of the female artists you see today wouldn't be able to express themselves sexually. Madonna broke a lot of barriers, and again, although I'm not a fan, I can say she's earned her high place. Oh god, and I love industrial and goth music, and so many of those artists would say without Madonna, a lot of the sexual energy they're trying to give off in their music wouldn't have been there.
Hung Up isn't actually all that bad of a song. I wouldn't buy or even download it, but I mean, she's done a lot worse.
Another thing, she's been going strong for nearly 25 years with her music, and she's done so many transformations. You don't get a lot of diversity like that in a lot of artists.

there couldn't have been one thread. There are different topics that all branch out and 1 thread would be a convoluted mess no I ask, say you were on a hrrmmm, Madonna board, and Shirley had a kick ass new cd coming out and you felt like sharing...how would you feel if people acted like some of you are? Well, I would be making ONE thread about it, and have others comment and crit on it....and keep all reviews and such in one thread instead of making countless more threads which basically say the same thing. It get's annoying. yeah pretty much. The woman sneezes and we end up with another thread.

Also, a lot of the music scene owes a lot to Madonna. that includes Shirley's ability to be sexually forward, because, before Madonna, that wasn't ok. That is the most absurd statement on many levels.

That is the most absurd statement on many levels. Agreed If there was more than one thread about Shirl.. that is understandable, lol. But as I can see, there aren't many rockers on this board. Mostly poptarts. Most of the rocker fans lost their interest in Garbage a long time ago.....

Well, I'm still here, and I am surely not a poptart I don't think Madonna did two shits for anyone, musically or sexually. Without Madonna, Shirley would STILL be doing what she is doing. I don't understand why people say this and that influences other artists to be themselves. I think thats bullshit. No one is going to influence you unless you WANT to be influenced and are pretty much lost at who you are.

I think you might be a bit confused about what having an influence means.
It's not to totally possess the qualities of someone. True, there are times when people are seen as ripping off or soudning like a certain artist when they never intended to do so. To say epople that a person is lost for having an infleunce is pretty fucked up. There's a difference in wanting to be someone, and liking what they do, and showing it in your work.
You mean to tell me, no one in your life has infleucned you in some way by what they may say to you, or things they've done?

I'm not confused. I stick by what I said. The statement that was made was basically saying "If Madonna wasn't around, Shirley wouldn't be allowed, or have the courage, to be as sexually forward as she is." I don't think Shirley shows ANYTHING that Madonna has done. Nope, can't say I have been influenced to a point where I wouldn't have done it without them Sorry, lol.

Or if she's done anything for the whole "liberation of women's sexuality" bollocks and frankly I don't give two shits. I just think she's done some damn good pop music over the past 25 years.

I don't think Madonna influenced Shirley at all but I do think she paved the way for all the pop female artist who came after her to express themselves sexually... And Garbage was a very popular band so yeah But never forget that Chrissie Hynde, Patti Smith and specially Debbie Harry did it for Madonna (and for Shirley, obviously)
